Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 21 Oct 2026, 07:53 · Europe/Bucharest

Vacherot's serve against Van Assche's return is the contest: 10.3 aces a match and 75.9% first-serve points won on one side, 38.2% return points and 44.4% break-point conversion on the other.

Vacherot is the likelier winner, narrowly, and 1.44 asks too much of him; the one price worth a second look is Van Assche at 2.75.

Context

The 1,000 points banked for the 2025 title are gone, and he arrives at a 250 ranked 32, down from a career-high 16 in May. His level immediately before Shanghai was high: three straight wins in Tokyo over Alexander Blockx, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Arthur Fils before a loss to Jiri Lehecka. He has not competed since 12 October, while Van Assche has a completed match on this court, and a first-edition event gives him a week with no points to defend, so a run here would partly offset the Shanghai loss.
- Beat Báez 6-4 7-6(5) in Shanghai to open the title defence
- That win was a 10th straight at the event, qualifying included
- Lost 6-4 6-2 to Tommy Paul in Shanghai on 12 October
- No matches played between that defeat and this second round
ConfirmedSources checked 21 Oct 2026, 07:50 · Europe/Bucharest
Vacherot's serve is his clearest route to cheap holds and short points on an indoor court.
He lands 61.3% of first serves and wins three-quarters of those points, so service games should come at little cost. The second serve is the softer spot at 48.4% won with 3.9 double faults a match, and that is where Van Assche's return can work its way into the match.
- 9.8 aces per match across 13 matches in his last 15 (127 aces), latest match 12 October 2026
- 76.0% first-serve points won (475 of 625) across 13 matches
- 61.3% first serves in (625 of 1020)
- 48.4% second-serve points won (191 of 395) and 3.9 double faults per match
His return is the part of his tennis most likely to trouble a big server.
Almost four return points in ten is a high rate, and he takes close to half of his break chances, so Vacherot's serve will be tested rather than free. The cost sits on his own delivery: 4.3 aces against 5.2 double faults per match and only 47.0% of second-serve points won.
- 39.1% return points won (465 of 1189) across 15 matches, latest match 20 October 2026
- 46.6% break points converted (48 of 103)
- 4.3 aces and 5.2 double faults per match across 15 matches
- 47.0% second-serve points won (212 of 451)
The straight-set scoreline hides a first-set tie-break, so he reaches this second round without having played a deciding set or a long match on a surface he rarely competes on at tour level. The win matters more for continuity than for any conditioning edge, since Vacherot has been idle for nine days and is the fresher player by rest. Van Assche is ranked 48 against Vacherot's 32, so the home player starts as the lower-ranked man and his first-round form is the clearest evidence of where his game stands this week.
- Beat Clément Tabur 7-6(3), 6-3 in the Lyon first round
- Tabur came through qualifying and was ranked outside the top 150
- Previous two matches were losses to Arthur Fils in Tokyo and Bu Yunchaokete in Shanghai
- Last win before that was over Cameron Norrie at the US Open on 30 August
