Context last updated 21 Oct 2026, 07:51 · Europe/Bucharest

Medvedev defends his Almaty title and opens against a No. 109 who already has a three-set win on this court, while the top seed has not played since 17 October.

Medvedev should still win, most likely in straight sets. The 1.05 match price, 1.1 for the first set, 1.1 for the second and 1.29 for a 2-0 win ask more certainty than the record supports; Shimabukuro at 10 is the only quoted price assessed as potential value.

Context

Almaty is one of the few events where Medvedev arrives as both the top seed and the reigning champion, and the points from the 2025 title are already banked, so the week is a defence rather than an opportunity. That framing matters against a No. 109 opponent in a second round he enters without a match behind him: an early exit would remove the whole of last year's haul in one afternoon. The limitation is scale, because an ATP 250 title block is small next to what he plays for at Masters events, so the stakes are real but modest.
- Medvedev won the 2025 Almaty Open and is the No. 1 seed in the 2026 draw.
- The 2026 event is played on indoor hard courts in Almaty.
- Medvedev entered the draw with a bye into the second round.

Four completed matches in Shanghai, including wins over two top-20 opponents, is the most substantial hard-court block Medvedev has put together this autumn, and the five-day gap to this second round makes recovery the smaller question. The caveat is that the run ended in a straight-set loss to a 20-year-old in his first Masters semi-final, so it establishes a level rather than a clean upward trend. It matters here as a benchmark, because Shimabukuro's last tour-level outing before Almaty was a 2-6 4-6 defeat to a player ranked No. 57.
- Jodar beat Medvedev 6-3, 6-4 in the Shanghai semi-final .
- Medvedev had beaten Tsitsipas 6-4 7-5 and Paul 6-3 1-6 6-3 earlier in Shanghai.
- Medvedev said of Jodar: "He's a great player. I mean, he's top 10, it's not like he's 60th in the world."

The win ends a run of three straight-sets losses at tour level and comes against a qualifier ranked 39 places higher, the first evidence this month that Shimabukuro can hold a tour-level match together across three sets. It also gives him the only match data either man has on this court this week. The limitation is that a single three-set win over a qualifier says more about his level than his trajectory, and he had won only two of his previous eleven hard-court matches before arriving in Almaty.
- Shimabukuro beat Safiullin 6-7(4), 6-4, 6-4 .
- Safiullin had come through qualifying and was ranked No. 70.
- It is Shimabukuro's first Almaty main draw since 2023 and his 16th tour-level main draw of 2026.
- Before Almaty he had lost in straight sets in Shanghai, Tokyo and Hangzhou.

The one clear asymmetry in the fixture is freshness: Medvedev has not played a competitive point since 17 October, while Shimabukuro has a completed three-set match and one clear day to recover. Court familiarity therefore sits with the lower-ranked player and rested legs with the seed, so the schedule argument cuts in two directions at once. The counterpoint is that a five-day break and a bye leave Medvedev with no match rhythm on an unfamiliar indoor court, which is the usual cost of a top seed's opening round.
- Medvedev entered the second round on a bye.
- Shimabukuro won a three-set match .
- Medvedev's previous match was the Shanghai semi-final on 17 October.
