Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 17:48 · Europe/Bucharest

A former top-50 player on a protected ranking against the home second seed: that is the shape of this Cali first round.

Mejia should win, most likely in two sets, though he is playing his first clay match since July. None of the quoted prices is worth backing — 1.3 for Mejia to win is about fair, 1.4 for him to take the second set barely differs, and 1.36 for the first set asks for more than the evidence gives.

Context

Coria's presence is itself the relevant fact: without the protected ranking, No. 843 would not have earned main-draw entry at a Challenger 75, so this is a former top-50 player competing on a ranking frozen from before his decline. That places him as the more decorated but far lower-ranked side of the fixture, unseeded against the second seed. The protected ranking restores entry position only, not form: he has five wins in his last fifteen matches. It explains how he is in the draw, not how well he is playing.
- Coria received main-draw entry at the 2026 Cali Open using a protected ranking.
- His current ranking is No. 843, with a career-high of No. 49 from 13 February 2023.
- He was ranked No. 902 when he played the Buenos Aires Challenger on 24 September 2026.

Coria arrives in Cali after nearly four weeks without a match, and the last thing he said publicly about his own career was that a defeat might have been the end of it. That does not establish that he is retiring or that his approach in Cali differs; his entries in Guayaquil and Villa María point the other way. What it does establish is a 34-year-old playing on a protected ranking with no recent competitive rhythm, against an opponent who has just come through a Masters 1000 qualifying draw.
- Coria lost in the second round of the Buenos Aires Challenger on 24 September 2026 and left his continuity in doubt at the post-match press conference, saying he felt it could have been the last time.
- Two days earlier he had spoken about retirement after a long three-set win at the same event.
- He has not played a match since that 24 September loss.

Seeding has a concrete consequence here: as the second seed, Mejia cannot meet another seed in the first round, while Coria enters unseeded on a protected ranking at No. 843. Cali is also the one week on this South American swing where Mejia is the home player in front of a Colombian crowd, a setting unavailable to an Argentine veteran. The counterweight is surface: his 2026 results have come almost entirely on hard courts, so ranking and venue point one way while adaptation points the other.
- Mejia was seeded second in the singles main draw of the 2026 Cali Open, ranked No. 119 as of 5 October 2026.
- No other Colombian in the field is ranked above him.
- The Cali field includes Gustavo Heide, Francisco Comesaña, Hugo Dellien and Nicolás Jarry, drawn from ten countries.

Mejia's last month has been hard-court tennis in Asia, ending with a main-draw exit and the trip home to Colombia, and Cali is his first clay event in three months. That is the clearest preparation difference in the fixture: Coria's most recent tennis was already on clay in Buenos Aires on 22-24 September, though he has not played since. Both arrive short of clay rhythm, but only Mejia is changing surface, which typically costs timing in the opening match of a swing.
- Mejia beat Chun-Hsin Tseng and Michael Zheng in Shanghai qualifying in the first week of October 2026.
- He lost 6-4 6-4 to Juan Manuel Cerúndolo in the main-draw first round .
- After Shanghai he travelled to Colombia for the Cali Challenger 75.
- His previous clay-court match was a 6-1 7-5 win over Matias Soto on 12 July 2026.
