Goffin's farewell in Brussels runs straight into a lucky loser playing better tennis: Bertola beat the second seed in qualifying, while Goffin has won once in his last seven completed hard-court matches.

Bertola is the likely winner, but not by much. At 1.65 he is the only price marked as potential value; Goffin at 2.25 asks for more than his form supports.

Context

A home wildcard in a farewell week gives this first round a clear local favourite and explains why a player ranked 467 is in the draw at all. The occasion is unusual rather than decorative: it is the last match week of a career that reached No. 7 in November 2017, in the city where he is being honoured. What it does not do is change his tennis — two wins in 2026, both in qualifying — while the opponent arrives with three matches behind him in the past week.
- Goffin, a former world No. 7 now ranked 467, ends his career at the conclusion of the Brussels tournament.
- The event runs 17-25 October 2026 at Brussels Expo on indoor hard courts, with the final weekend moved from Palais 12 to Palais 5.
- The tournament presented the week as his final chapter and a last appearance in front of the Belgian crowd.

A lucky-loser place means Bertola is in the main draw without winning his qualifying final, so he contests a first round his week's results had not earned him. That matters for the fixture because a 227th-ranked player gets a tour-level opportunity and because the withdrawal removed a former top-five name from the event on the day before play began. The reprieve governs entry, not level: he had lost 3-6 7-6(6) 7-6(4) to Federico Cina hours earlier, and nothing about the place changes how he is playing.
- Rune withdrew from Brussels after his back seized up, with scans confirming nothing serious and two to three days of rest expected.
- Rune held a wildcard into the event and was ranked around 195 after nearly a year out with an Achilles injury.
- Bertola was listed into the main draw as a lucky loser and placed against Goffin.

A ranking of 467 is not just a number in this draw: Goffin's only wins this season came in clay-court qualifying, and he has not won a tour-level main-draw match in 2026. Against a 227th-ranked opponent the home wildcard therefore carries far less ranking cushion than the venue suggests. The limitation is that the record spans months broken by long gaps between events, so it describes a season rather than his current fortnight, and one 6-1 6-0 defeat on a Challenger hard court is a narrow basis for reading the first round.
- Goffin's two wins in 2026 came in qualifying at Monte Carlo and Roland Garros, both on clay.
- He went 0-5 in tour-level main draws in 2026 and stood 2-10 across all matches at the end of September.
- His most recent match, at the Mouilleron-le-Captif Challenger, was a 6-1 6-0 loss to Clement Chidekh.

A 227th-ranked lucky loser beating a 108th-ranked seed who owns two tour-level titles is the result that keeps this first round from being a formality on paper. It shows Bertola held his serve and stayed level for over two hours against a far bigger hitter on an indoor hard court, evidence the ranking does not capture. The counterweight is immediate: he followed it by losing to Cina in a third-set tiebreak, so the win did not become a run and he enters the main draw on a defeat.
- Mpetshi Perricard was the second seed in Brussels qualifying and ranked 108.
- Bertola won 7-6(4) 6-7(2) 7-5 on 17 October after dropping the second-set tiebreak.
- Bertola then lost the final qualifying round to Federico Cina in three sets.
