Context last updated 20 Oct 2026, 03:05 · Europe/Bucharest

A seed eleven days idle against a qualifier on his third match in three days, on a slow new indoor court: that is the shape of Fery against Gojo.

Fery should win, but 1.6 for the match gives nothing. The prices with something behind them are Gojo for the first set at 2.2, over 24.5 games at 2.1 and a deciding third set at 2.3.

Context

Gojo has played roughly four hours of competitive tennis in this building in two days, closing out Maestrelli in a deciding tie-break and then getting past Sachko in straight sets, while Fery's only tennis since 9 October has been practice. A third match in three days tends to surface in second-set serving and tie-break margins, and both of Gojo's wins were settled by tie-breaks or a tight set, so his route through qualifying was not comfortable. The counterweight is that eleven days without a match leaves Fery hunting timing on a court he has never played, and a first round is an awkward place to find rhythm.
- Gojo beat Francesco Maestrelli 4-6 6-3 7-6(6) on 18 October, recovering from a set down and winning a deciding tie-break after two hours 36 minutes.
- Gojo beat Vitaliy Sachko 6-3 7-6(4) in the final qualifying round to reach the main draw.
- Fery's most recent match was a three-tie-break defeat to Karen Khachanov in Shanghai on 9 October.
- The first round on 20 October is Gojo's third match in three days and Fery's first in eleven days.

A court that is holding serve at 79% and producing 0.64 aces per game takes away some of the free points a 196 cm server collects, and a low bounce reduces the margin for the flat, first-strike tennis that suits Gojo. The same conditions reward the better mover and the more patient returner, which points towards Fery, the shorter and quicker of the two. Twelve qualifying matches and a single main-draw match are a thin basis for a firm read on pace, so this is a provisional picture that the first full day of main-draw play will sharpen.
- Qualifying week in Lyon produced 79% service holds, 71% first-serve points won and 0.64 aces per game.
- The equivalent hold rates were 84% in Almaty and 82% in Brussels over the same number of qualifying matches.
- The first main-draw match, Balshaw d. Faria 6-2 4-6 6-3, was played on a slow court with a low bounce.
- The sample covers twelve qualifying matches and one main-draw match.

Gojo's first-set record is the strongest single split in this matchup, and it comes from a player who has already played twice this week.
Gojo has taken the opening set in 10 of 15 hard-court matches between 3 August and 19 October, and his 5.2 games won against 4.3 lost per first set shows he is rarely chasing. For Fery, that makes a slow start a real risk after eleven days without a match; the counterweight is that Fery's own first sets are level at 5-5, and the margins involved are often a single break.
- 15 hard-court matches tracked from 3 August to 19 October 2026
- First sets: 10 wins, 5 losses, 5.2 games won and 4.3 lost on average
- One first-set tie-break in those 15 matches
The Shanghai fortnight is the clearest recent measure of Fery's level: a former Grand Slam champion beaten comfortably once the opening tie-break went his way, followed by three tie-break sets against a top-30 opponent he led in the decider before losing. It also frames his season, because the Cilic win ended a run of tour-level defeats that stretched back to late August and removed the impression of a player sliding after Wimbledon. What the record does not show is how he handles a 196 cm server on a slow indoor court, since neither Cilic nor Khachanov presented that problem in the same form.
- Fery beat Marin Cilic 7-6 6-1 in Shanghai, his first tour-level win in about six weeks.
- Khachanov beat Fery 7-6(6) 6-7(5) 7-6(2) in three hours 29 minutes, coming back from 2-4 down in the deciding set.
- All three sets of the Shanghai match went to tie-breaks.
- Fery lost 6-4 3-6 6-4 to Lorenzo Musetti in Tokyo on 1 October.
