Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 17:15 · Europe/Bucharest

A top-20 seed without a completed win since 4 September against a 217th-ranked qualifier who beat No.

19 Eala two weeks ago — that is the tension in Ningbo. Cirstea should still come through, but 1.3 on her asks more than a 4-4 hard-court record supports. Shi at 3.5, a third set at 2.6 and Shi for the first set at 2.9 are the prices with something in them.

Context

The Wuhan match is Cirstea's only competitive outing in the five weeks before Ningbo, so her recent match evidence consists of one 2-hour-41-minute defeat in which she took the first set 6-1, led 4-0 in the second and held three match points. That leaves almost no current sample on how she closes out sets on hard courts, going into a first-round match against an opponent who has already played twice at this venue. The other reading is that she produced a 6-1 set and a 4-0 lead against a home wildcard, which is a better baseline than the result alone suggests.
- Guo Hanyu won 1-6, 7-6(6), 7-5 in 2 hours 41 minutes in Wuhan .
- Cirstea held three match points and led a set and 4-0 in the second set before the reversal.
- Cirstea's previous match was a 6-3, 6-4 loss to Jessica Pegula at the US Open on 6 September 2026.
- Cirstea is the No. 8 seed in Ningbo and ranked No. 16.

Shi's route into the main draw was one completed win plus a retirement, so her qualifying workload was lighter than two full matches, and the Korneeva match turned on a first-set tiebreak she took 7-6(4) before a 6-0 second set. The route matters because it leaves her with two matches on the Ningbo hard courts in two days while Cirstea's last match was in Wuhan on 13 October. The limitation is that Frech retired after seven games at 6-4, 0-1, so only the Korneeva result reflects a completed match.
- Shi beat Magdalena Frech 6-4, 0-1 (retired) in Ningbo qualifying .
- Shi beat Alina Korneeva 7-6(4), 6-0 in the final qualifying round .
- Korneeva was the ninth seed in qualifying and ranked No. 74.
- Shi entered qualifying as a wildcard and is ranked No. 217.

A No. 217 qualifier beating the No. 19 seed at a WTA 1000 two weeks ago is the clearest available evidence that her ranking understates her current hard-court level, and it followed three-set wins in qualifying over Peyton Stearns and Kamilla Rakhimova. That makes repeated match wins in China, rather than the ranking, the relevant guide to what she brings into a first-round match against a top-20 seed. The counterweight sits in how the run started and ended: Eala lost seven straight games from a set and 3-2 lead, and Fernandez then beat Shi in straight sets.
- Shi beat Alexandra Eala 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the first round in Wuhan on 12 October 2026.
- Eala led by a set and 3-2 before Shi won seven consecutive games.
- Shi beat the top qualifying seed Peyton Stearns 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 and Kamilla Rakhimova 7-6(2), 6-1 in Wuhan qualifying.
- Leylah Fernandez beat Shi 6-3, 6-4 in the next round .

Four of her 14 opening sets went to a tiebreak and she won six of them, so the first set has stayed close even where she fell behind. Her 10-4 record in second sets is the strongest part of that sample, which is why Cirstea's 5-3 first-set mark is a lead worth having rather than a cushion.
- Set 1 across 14 hard-court matches, 22 September to 18 October 2026: 6 wins, 8 losses, four tiebreaks.
- Set 2 in the same 14 matches: 10 wins, 4 losses, one tiebreak.
- Scorelines from those 14 matches: five 2-0 wins, five 2-1 wins, three 0-2 losses, one 1-2 loss.
- Five of the 14 matches contained a tiebreak.
