Context last updated 16 Oct 2026, 22:35 · Europe/Bucharest

Ningbo qualifying opens with Frech, the world No. 56, against Shi, the No.

217. The recent record runs the other way: Frech has split her last 14 hard-court matches, while Shi has won 10 of her last 15 with a top-20 win at Wuhan. Frech is still the likelier winner, but 1.5 on her is unappealing, and Shi at 2.6 is the one reviewed price that offers something; the two-set finish at 1.45 is passed over.

Context

Shi, ranked No. 217, arrives with recent proof she can beat a top-20 opponent on a hard court, which is the most relevant form evidence for a first meeting against the higher-ranked Frech. It also shows she can recover inside a match, having trailed Eala by a set before winning seven straight games. The counterweight is that the week ended in a straight-set loss to Fernandez, so it shows a high ceiling rather than sustained dominance.
- Beat 13th seed Alexandra Eala 4-6 6-3 6-3 in the Wuhan Open first round on 12 October 2026.
- The win was her first WTA 1000 main-draw victory and her first top-20 win; Eala was ranked No. 19.
- Eala took the opening set before Shi won seven straight games.
- Lost 6-3 6-4 to Leylah Fernandez in the Wuhan second round on 14 October 2026.
ConfirmedSources checked 16 Oct 2026, 22:32 · Europe/Bucharest
Shi's second set has been the stronger half of her recent matches, a pattern built over 15 completed hard-court matches.
Frech, by contrast, has won only 6 of 14 second sets in her own 3 August to 14 October hard-court sample, so a split set would give Shi a real foothold. The caveat is sample size: 15 matches is a short window, and Shi lost her most recent second set 4-6 to Leylah Fernandez on 14 October.
- Shi won 10 of 15 second sets across 15 completed hard-court matches between 16 September and 14 October 2026.
- She averaged 5.47 games won and 4.33 games lost per second set in that sample.
- One of those 15 matches produced a second-set tiebreak.
The Ningbo main draw is headed by defending champion and world No. 1 Elena Rybakina, so a player of Frech's ranking is in the qualifying field rather than the main draw. For this fixture it means Frech is the stronger-ranked player but carries the extra burden of needing two wins to reach the main draw, and a first-round exit ends her week. That raises the stakes compared with an ordinary first-round match for both players.
- Frech is listed fifth in the Ningbo Open qualifying seeds with a ranking of 56.
- Her qualifying path is Shi in the first round and Dong or Korneeva in the second.
ConfirmedSources checked 16 Oct 2026, 22:32 · Europe/Bucharest
Frech has now spent consecutive weeks starting in or around a qualifying draw, and her Wuhan week showed she can turn a reprieve into a WTA 1000 main-draw win. It matters here because she faces a lower-ranked but match-sharp opponent, and her own recent evidence is a 1-1 main-draw record capped by a heavy loss to Swiatek. Her qualifying loss in Wuhan came against an opponent outside the top 300, which is a relevant sign of her current level.
- Frech entered the Wuhan Open main draw as a lucky loser after losing in qualifying.
- Beat Mananchaya Sawangkaew 6-3 7-6(5) in the first round before losing 6-2 6-1 to Iga Swiatek on 14 October 2026.
