Context last updated 16 Oct 2026, 15:25 · Europe/Bucharest

Top seed Sinja Kraus, the world No. 75, meets Japan's Momoko Kobori, a doubles specialist ranked 389th, in Osaka qualifying, with Kraus's 7-7 run over her last 14 hard matches tempering her standing.

Kraus remains the likely winner, but 1.08 asks too much. The quoted prices that offer something are Kobori to take the second set at 5.25, over 2.5 sets at 3.5, Kraus 2-1 at 4.75, a Kobori match win at 8 and Kobori with a 4.5-game start at 3.25.

Context

Kraus's Beijing run is the freshest evidence of her current level and it came on outdoor hard courts against a top-100 field, so it is a better guide to this fixture than her season-long ranking. The wins over Joint and Yastremska showed she can close out tour-level opponents, while the match she lost went to three sets, which points to a competitive but not untouchable level. The counterpoint is that she then lost the Wuhan qualifying final to Zeynep Sonmez a week later, so the Beijing form has not carried forward automatically. She is still the highest-ranked player in this qualifying draw.
- Reached the round of 16 at the WTA 1000 China Open in October 2026, her first WTA 1000 round of 16
- Beat Maya Joint 6-3 3-6 7-5 and Dayana Yastremska 6-1 6-4
- Advanced when Anastasia Potapova retired with Kraus leading 4-1
- Loss to Nikola Bartunkova in the fourth round; career-high ranking No. 75
ConfirmedSources checked 16 Oct 2026, 15:22 · Europe/Bucharest
Kraus comes into Osaka off back-to-back events, having played four matches in Beijing and two more in Wuhan qualifying inside a fortnight, and she called for treatment in the second set against Sonmez. That matters because she must now win two matches in Osaka qualifying to reach the main draw while her opponent has played very little singles recently. The limitation is that no withdrawal, walkover or retirement has been reported: she completed the Wuhan match and is listed in the Osaka draw, so this reads as a workload and fatigue note rather than a confirmed problem. It is worth watching if the scheduled start slips or if she shows any physical management on court.
- Beat Magda Linette 7-6(3) 6-2 in Wuhan qualifying
- Lost the Wuhan qualifying final to Zeynep Sonmez 6-2 6-4
- Received a medical timeout during the Sonmez match, with treatment not visible
ReportedSources checked 16 Oct 2026, 15:22 · Europe/Bucharest
The top seeding confirms Kraus is the highest-ranked entrant in qualifying, so she carries the favourite's tag and the expectation of winning two rounds to reach the main draw. It also sets the standard of the draw, with several players inside the top 100 competing for the same qualifying places, so an opening qualifying match is not a soft draw. The seeding does not change how she plays; it mainly frames the level of opposition and the depth of the field she has to get through.
- Kraus listed as the No. 1 seed in the Osaka singles qualifying draw
- Qualifying field includes Taylah Preston, Maya Joint, Claire Liu, Harriet Dart and Sofia Kenin
ConfirmedSources checked 16 Oct 2026, 15:22 · Europe/Bucharest
The result shows Kobori has been competing at tour level and reaching late rounds recently, although in doubles rather than singles. It is relevant because she is a doubles specialist meeting a ranked singles qualifier, and doubles form tends to support net play and returning rather than baseline consistency over three sets. That distinction is the main limitation: the Guadalajara run does not directly measure the singles level she will need against Kraus.
- Reached the Guadalajara Open WTA 500 doubles final with Peangtarn Plipuech
- Lost the final to Nicole Melichar and Cristina Bucsa in a match tie-break
