Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 04:34 · Europe/Bucharest

Dodig, 11-1 on clay recently and fresh from the Braga title, meets higher-ranked Martinez, a Genoa finalist whose clay results have been mixed.

Dodig's 11-from-12 second-set record is the most one-sided figure, but he has played five matches in five days. Dodig at 1.55 to win, and 1.60 for the first or second set, asks too much; no quoted price here is worth taking.

Context

Dodig won five matches in five days in Braga and finished the final, two days before this first-round match, so he carries both a title-winning run and the heavier recent workload of the two players. The ranking breakthrough confirms a clear step up on clay in 2026 and makes him a credible underdog against a higher-ranked opponent. The counterweight is recovery: he has one rest day after a three-set final, while Martinez last played on 10 October.
- Dodig won the Braga Challenger 75, beating Elmer Moller 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the final.
- Third career Challenger title, second of 2026, and first outside Italy.
- Set for a new career-high ranking and a first top-150 entry.

The run shows Martinez is still finalist-standard at Challenger level on clay, the surface for this match, and that he can close out a deciding set against a top-200 opponent. It also explains his current form base while his ranking sits at 130, well below the career-high No. 36 he reached in February 2025. The limitation is recency: that final was a month ago, and his only clay match since was a straight-sets loss to a lower-ranked opponent in Buenos Aires in late September.
- Martinez reached his 16th ATP Challenger final at the Genoa CH125 in September 2026.
- He beat Laslo Djere 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinal and lost the final 6-4, 6-2 to Thiago Seyboth Wild.

Dodig's second-set record is the most one-sided figure here: 11 wins from 12 clay matches. If the match reaches a second set, he has repeatedly closed it out quickly. Martinez has won five of seven second sets himself, so it is an edge rather than a guarantee, and one early break can still swing a set.
- Dodig won 11 of 12 second sets across 12 completed clay matches between 31 August and 11 October 2026.
- His second sets averaged 6.00 games won to 3.42 lost in that sample, with three second-set tiebreaks.
Martinez has won only three of seven opening sets on clay, a slow-start pattern that matters in a best-of-three first round. Dodig's own first-set edge is much smaller, at seven wins from 12, so the opening set is a closer contest than the second sets suggest. Losing it would leave Martinez needing two of the last three sets.
- Martinez won 3 of 7 opening sets across seven completed clay matches between 3 and 22 September 2026.
- He averaged 5.14 games won to 4.86 lost in those first sets, with one first-set tiebreak.
