Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 15:13 · Europe/Bucharest

Kostyuk is the higher-ranked player and the likelier winner, but she returns from a wrist injury with no match since 17 September 2026, while Sakkari has already won here this week.

At 2.75 Sakkari is the best of the quoted prices, with Over 21.5 games at 2.00 and Under 2.5 sets at 1.45 offering slimmer margins. Kostyuk at 1.45 asks for more than her layoff uncertainty justifies.

Context

Kostyuk has not competed since a three-set loss to Liudmila Samsonova on 17 September, having withdrawn from her most recent events with a wrist injury, so this second round is her first match in about four weeks. A wrist problem directly affects serving and backhand pace, and the unknown is whether she can find rhythm against an opponent who has already played and won on these courts. Her entry in Wuhan shows the injury is not currently preventing play, and she remains in the WTA Finals race, so the relevant risk is rust and load management rather than confirmed unavailability.
- Kostyuk withdrew from her most recent tournaments because of a wrist injury and arrived in Wuhan to resume competition.
- Her last recorded match before Wuhan was a three-set loss to Liudmila Samsonova on 17 September 2026.
- She was still listed in the WTA Finals race when she entered the Wuhan draw.

Wuhan is the last big points event before the WTA Finals field is settled, and the two players arrive on opposite sides of the qualifying line. Kostyuk holds 3,910 race points against Karolina Muchova's 4,615 for the final place, so every win here directly improves her position, while Sakkari is no longer among the players who can qualify. The asymmetry raises the practical value of the match for Kostyuk but does not by itself change how either player strikes the ball. The race table is a projection rather than a guarantee of effort, and Kostyuk's return from a wrist injury is the more immediate sporting variable.
- Kostyuk held 3,910 race points, behind Karolina Muchova's 4,615 for the final qualifying place.
- Sakkari was listed among the players who can no longer qualify for the WTA Finals.

Kostyuk has had the better of this matchup lately, and the 2024 meeting shows her recovering from a set down to win it. Both of her wins came in three sets, which fits two players whose recent matches often stretch past two sets. Sakkari's wins came in 2021 and 2022, so the recent direction favours Kostyuk without saying much about this week.
- Kostyuk won the most recent meeting 4-6 7-6(5) 6-4 on 30 July 2024, coming from a set down and taking the second set in a tiebreak.
- That result left the four-meeting series level at 2-2, with Kostyuk winning the two most recent meetings, in 2023 and 2024, both in three sets.
Kostyuk's ranking of No. 10 is the product of a specific 2026 season: a first WTA 1000 title in Madrid in May, a first top-ten placing in the week of 14 September, and semi-final runs at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon. It explains why she is the higher-ranked player in this matchup and shows she has recently beaten the level of opposition she now faces. The caveat is that the most recent of those results came before her wrist layoff, so the ranking reflects form from before the interruption.
- Kostyuk won the Madrid WTA 1000 title in May 2026 after also winning in Rouen.
- She reached the semi-finals at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon in 2026.
- She entered the top 10 for the first time in the week of 14 September 2026.
