Pre-match view

Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 03:43 · Europe/Bucharest

Birrell, the Seoul champion who beat Volynets there in three sets, meets a Volynets who has just won two Wuhan qualifying matches and owns the better hard-court serve numbers.

Volynets is a slight, low-confidence lean to win, but none of the reviewed prices — Volynets to win the first or second set at 1.55, a Volynets 2-0 win at 2.3, Over 21.5 games at 1.8, or Under 2.5 sets at 1.55 — is worth backing.

Context

Birrell, 28, converted her third tour-level final into a maiden WTA title in Seoul, and the run lifted her inside the top 50 ahead of this first-round match. The result is the strongest current evidence of her hard-court level and shapes her standing as the higher-ranked player in the pairing. The limitation is the age of the evidence: the title came, and she has completed only one tournament since, so it describes recent form rather than her level in Wuhan this week.
- Won the Korea Open in Seoul, beating Maya Joint 6-4, 6-2
- Her maiden WTA singles title, on a third tour-level final appearance
- First all-Australian WTA final since 2017

Seoul is the most recent meeting between the two and it went the distance, with Volynets taking the first set before Birrell won the decider 7-5. That gives Birrell the only recent reading on the matchup going into this first-round rematch. The basis is thin, though: one hard-court match, and Volynets has since played four matches including Wuhan qualifying while Birrell has played three, so the earlier result does not fix how a rematch will unfold.
- Seoul quarter-final
- Birrell won 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 after dropping the first set
- The most recent meeting between the two players

Coming through qualifying gives Volynets two completed matches in Wuhan and familiarity with the courts and conditions before the first round, a genuine preparation difference for a player outside the direct-entry group. The qualifying final against Osorio also went three sets, so the route added meaningful court time. The trade-off is that the acclimatisation came with more minutes played, and match rhythm is not the same as a physical advantage.
- Won the qualifying first round over Polina Kudermetova 6-2, 6-1 on 10 October 2026
- Won the qualifying final over Camila Osorio 3-6, 6-3, 6-4
- Earned a place in the Wuhan main draw

Volynets, the world No. 74, has been the steadier player after the opening set through the late-season hard-court swing.
Volynets' second sets are the most reliable part of her recent hard-court form, and her straight-set wins show she tends to close matches once she is ahead. The sample is 15 completed hard-court matches from 31 July to 11 October 2026, so it describes a recent run rather than a fixed level. One of the two second sets she lost came against Birrell in Seoul.
- 15 completed hard-court matches from 31 July to 11 October 2026
- 13 second sets won and two lost
- Nine of ten hard-court wins came in straight sets
