Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 03:30 · Europe/Bucharest

A clay-court first round sets the better clay record against the better serve.

Aguilar Cardozo's 13-2 run, 12 opening sets from 15 and stronger return numbers make him the likelier winner, while Meligeni Alves owns the only previous meeting and wins 70.2% of first-serve points on clay. The 1.78 on Aguilar Cardozo to win is the one quoted price worth backing; the 1.95 on Meligeni Alves, match or either set, does not hold up, and the same 1.78 on a single set adds nothing.

Context

Aguilar Cardozo's ranking of No. 342 understates a run that produced four consecutive ITF titles in August 2026 and then 28 wins in 29 clay matches, highlighted by a 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 win over top seed and 2024 champion Francisco Comesana at the September 2026 Buenos Aires Challenger after he saved a 2-4 deficit in the final set. That result is the clearest evidence that he can beat higher-ranked Challenger opposition, which is directly relevant against a former top-120 opponent here. The run is not current: it ended with a second-round loss at Antofagasta in the days before Santa Cruz, so his opening form is the open question rather than a fixed trend.
- Aguilar Cardozo beat Francisco Comesana at the September 2026 Buenos Aires Challenger after saving a 2-4 deficit in the deciding set, converting his sixth match point of the contest.
- He had won 28 of his previous 29 matches before his October 2026 Antofagasta second round.

Meligeni Alves reached the Antofagasta quarterfinals in the week before Santa Cruz, beating Nick Hardt and the higher-ranked Juan Pablo Varillas in straight sets before a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Thiago Seyboth Wild . It is his best result of the recent stretch and evidence that his clay level sits above his No. 453 ranking, given that Varillas was ranked around No. 200. The counterpoint is that the run ended with his least competitive score of the week against a top-140 opponent, so the form line is positive but came against largely lower-ranked opposition. He arrives with a similar rest period to his opponent, making this a form marker rather than a recovery advantage.
- Meligeni Alves beat Nick Hardt 6-3, 6-3 and Juan Pablo Varillas 6-3, 6-1 at Antofagasta before losing 6-1, 6-4 to Thiago Seyboth Wild in the quarterfinals.

The only direct sample between the two is their 2026 Sao Leopoldo clay meeting, which Aguilar Cardozo opened by taking the first set 6-3 before Meligeni Alves won the second 6-0 and led 2-0 in the third when Aguilar Cardozo retired. Meligeni Alves therefore owns the head-to-head, and the two have already shared a clay court earlier in 2026, so there is no unfamiliarity in the opener. The retirement removes the competitive finish, so the match is a thinner guide than a completed three-set result and the fixture is better read from the players' separate clay records. It matters most as the sole direct reference point for the pairing rather than as a repeatable tactical pattern.
- Their 2026 Sao Leopoldo round-of-32 match on outdoor clay ended 3-6, 6-0, 2-0 retired in Meligeni Alves's favour.

His final match before Santa Cruz was a 7-6(1), 2-6, 7-6(9) second-round loss to Lautaro Midon at Antofagasta that lasted 3h02, having come through qualifying to reach it. The result shows a current level able to push a top-210 clay opponent to the limit across three sets, and it is the most recent measure of his ability to close a match, since he held two match points in the deciding set and did not convert. The cost is a heavy clay week and a five-day turnaround into Santa Cruz, which is a workload factor for an opener rather than a fitness concern. It also reinforces that most of his recent matches on this surface have gone the distance or near it.
- Midon won their Antofagasta second-round match 7-6(1), 2-6, 7-6(9) after 3h02, saving two match points in the deciding set.
- Aguilar Cardozo came through qualifying at Antofagasta before the loss.
