Lorenzo Carboni #562Italy22 – 1Mackenzie Mcdonald #169United States1

McDonald was seeded eighth in Braga and lost his opening match to Dutch qualifier Ryan Nijboer, taking the second set before losing the first and third. It is his only completed match in the ten days before Olbia and the most current read on his form. The defeat came on clay, where his 2026 record has been poor, so it does not map cleanly onto the hard court in Olbia.

Carboni is the home player in Olbia, ranked No. 562, and his recent results give no hard-court sample to work from.

Fourteen tracked matches, split 7-7, with nothing logged on hard courts in the same window. That leaves the surface as a genuine unknown rather than a demonstrated weakness. The ranking difference against a top-200 opponent therefore carries most of the weight in this first-round meeting.

The nine-match hard-court sample from 25 July to 29 September 2026 produced a 3-6 record, with an average of 4.9 games won and 5.6 lost in the opening set. Four of those nine matches ended in straight-set defeats, so he was often behind early rather than merely losing tight ones. Against an opponent with no tracked hard-court form, the first set is where a higher-ranked player would be expected to take charge.

Olbia is a 125-level Challenger on outdoor hard court, and this is the opening round, so the loser leaves the event immediately. Both players arrive from a clay-heavy October: Carboni's tracked matches since August are all on clay, and McDonald's most recent completed match came on clay in Braga on 7 October. The switch back to hard court is the main shared unknown of the opening round.
