Pre-match view

Context last updated 12 Oct 2026, 03:06 · Europe/Bucharest

Jiri Lehecka's serve against Rafael Jodar's stubborn return is the tension in this Shanghai third round, with Jodar holding the only meeting between them, 6-3 6-3 in Montreal.

Lehecka, the Tokyo finalist, is the slightly more likely winner in a match that could easily run to three sets. The quoted prices — 1.65 for Lehecka, 1.50 for a straight-sets finish and 1.73 for Lehecka to take the first set — all ask for more than the evidence supports, so none is worth taking.

Context

Jodar's 6-3 6-3 win in Montreal is the only completed match between them and the clearest direct evidence that he can control this matchup from the baseline on a surface similar to Shanghai's. It gives Jodar a concrete reference point as the two meet for a place in the last 16, and it is the strongest single argument against Lehecka's stronger recent results. The limitation is recency: the meeting predates Lehecka's run to the Tokyo final, and their Shanghai openers were separated by only a few minutes of court time, so the head-to-head describes August form rather than the current week.
- Jodar won the only recorded meeting 6-3 6-3 on hard court at the National Bank Open in August 2026
- The match was a Montreal round-of-16 tie

Lehecka arrives in Shanghai directly from his best week of the autumn, a run that included a straight-sets quarter-final win over the defending Shanghai champion Vacherot. That route matters because it shows Lehecka beating top-50 hard-court opposition and the man who lifted this title a year ago, which is why his recent form is the main counterweight to Jodar's Montreal win. The counterpoint is load and margin: he played five completed matches between 1 and 6 October before travelling, then took a first-round bye in Shanghai, and the final itself was a straight-sets loss. His Tokyo form supports him without separating him from Jodar, whose opener lasted almost exactly the same time.
- Lehecka lost the Tokyo final 7-6(4) 6-4 to Carlos Alcaraz on 6 October 2026
- He beat Valentin Vacherot, the defending Shanghai champion, in the Tokyo quarter-finals
ReportedSources checked 12 Oct 2026, 03:02 · Europe/Bucharest
Lehecka's serve held under almost no pressure in his opener, with a single break point faced across three sets, while Borges still took the middle set. That pattern is relevant against a returner who has been defending break points at a high rate, because it shows Lehecka can protect serve but also that he surrendered a set without being repeatedly broken. One match is a small sample and Borges sits well below Jodar in the rankings, so the clean break-point count is encouraging rather than decisive.
- Lehecka beat Nuno Borges 6-3 3-6 6-3 in 1 hour 58 minutes
- He faced one break point in the match

Jodar's first Shanghai match showed both vulnerability and resistance: he dropped the opening set to a player ranked 54th, then survived ten break points to secure the third-round place. Against Lehecka's serve, that break-point defence is a concrete asset demonstrated across the second and deciding sets. The limitation is the opponent: this resistance came against Tirante rather than a top-20 server, and the match ran just over two hours, so the same pressure may not carry directly into this fixture.
- Jodar beat Thiago Agustin Tirante 4-6 6-2 6-3 in just over two hours on his Shanghai debut
- He saved nine of ten break points, including all six in the deciding set
