A single qualifying final decides a Wuhan main-draw place, and the fourth seed Sönmez meets an unseeded Kraus whose hard-court results and Beijing round-of-16 run make her the marginal favourite.

Kraus to win is the likelier outcome. At 2.3 that price offers something; Sönmez at 1.6 asks too much from a player who has won five of her last 11 hard-court matches.

Context

The fixture is the second and final round of Wuhan qualifying, so the only prize is a place in the 56-player field that begins on 12 October. That is what frames the occasion: Sönmez, a top-60 player, entered the qualifying draw as its fourth seed, while Kraus arrived unseeded and beat the 16th seed, Magda Linette, in the first round. Both therefore carry different expectations into a single-elimination decider where the loser leaves Wuhan without a singles main-draw place. The qualifying seedings follow entry rankings rather than current form, so the four-seed gap between them understates how close they are on recent results.

Kraus beat Magda Linette 7-6(3) 6-2, removing the 16th seed in straight sets after a tight opening tie-break. The scoreline needs the context of Linette's slide: she had lost five matches in a row and had won only one of her previous eleven, which explains part of the margin. Kraus still had to serve out a tie-break set and close the second against an experienced former top-20 player, making this a more meaningful win than Linette's recent record implies. Because the opponent was in a poor run, the result confirms Kraus's level without establishing it against in-form opposition.
- Kraus beat Magda Linette 7-6(3) 6-2 in the Wuhan qualifying first round .
- Linette, the 16th seed in qualifying, had won only one of her previous eleven matches and lost for a sixth consecutive time.

Kraus reached the round of 16 at the Beijing WTA 1000, the deepest run of her autumn, with wins over Maya Joint and Dayana Yastremska and an advance when Anastasia Potapova retired. The run gives her a form base that Sönmez lacks, because Sönmez's own Beijing ended in a first-round loss to Maddison Inglis and the two arrive from opposite directions within the same swing. Kraus then lost 6-0 4-6 6-3 to Nikola Bartunkova, who reached the quarter-finals, and the lopsided opening set shows her level was not sustained across the event. The Beijing result therefore supports her current form without showing a repeatable match-to-match standard.
- Kraus reached the round of 16 at the Beijing WTA 1000 in October 2026.
- She beat Maya Joint 6-3 3-6 7-5 and Dayana Yastremska 6-1 6-4, and advanced when Anastasia Potapova retired.
- She lost 6-0 4-6 6-3 to Nikola Bartunkova, who reached the quarter-finals.
- Sönmez lost her opening match in Beijing in straight sets.

Sönmez's hard-court results in this window have clustered into clean finishes: five of her six defeats came in straight sets, and only three of the 11 matches went the distance. That profile helps in a qualifying final if she gets ahead early, but it also shows she has rarely turned a match around after dropping the opening set.
- 11 completed hard-court matches, 28 July to 10 October 2026: 5 wins, 6 losses.
- Set scorelines in those matches: 2-0 three times, 0-2 five times, 2-1 twice, 1-2 once.
- Only three of the 11 matches went to a deciding set.
