Pre-match view

Context last updated 9 Oct 2026, 03:37 · Europe/Bucharest

The question is whether a left-hander with a first Shanghai win behind him can disrupt the No. 2 seed's opening match.

Alcaraz, four days after the Tokyo title, should win, most likely in straight sets, though close first sets have been his habit this month. The prices on Alcaraz — 1.01 to win, 1.07 for either of the first two sets, 1.18 for a straight-sets win — offer nothing. Two do: over 20.5 games at 2.6 and a three-set match at 4.75.

Context

Mejía came through qualifying and had already won two matches on these courts, so the 78-minute straight-sets win cleared the first round without draining Cerúndolo before a second-round match against the No. 2 seed. It also interrupted a sequence of two defeats on the Asian swing, to Davidovich Fokina in Chengdu and Bu Yunchaokete in Beijing, which is the form line that makes this fixture look like a step up rather than a continuation. The limitation is level: beating the No. 119 says little about handling the No. 3, and Cerúndolo's hard-court sample for 2026 is thin.
- Cerúndolo won 6-4 6-4 in 1 hour 18 minutes against qualifier Nicolás Mejía in the Shanghai first round
- The result was his first main-draw win in Shanghai, after losing on his debut at the event
- It was his 10th career Masters 1000 win
- It ended a run of two straight defeats, to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in Chengdu and Bu Yunchaokete in Beijing

Alcaraz won five matches in six days in Tokyo, finishing with a straight-sets final against Jiří Lehečka, and did not play again before Saturday's second round in Shanghai. That is the clearest workload asymmetry in the fixture: Cerúndolo has one 78-minute win on these courts, while Alcaraz has been winning on a heavier schedule and has not lost a match since the US Open quarter-final. The title also came within a month of his return from the right-wrist injury that cost him the spring, making the current run the strongest available evidence of availability. The limit is that workload cuts both ways, and a title the week before a Masters 1000 can leave as much in the legs as it carries in form.
- Alcaraz beat Jiří Lehečka 7-6(4) 6-4 in the Tokyo final on 6 October
- He won five matches in six days to take the title
- One of those Tokyo wins ended with Denis Shapovalov retiring
- The title followed his return from a right-wrist injury at the US Open, where he reached the quarter-finals

The 2021 Next Gen Finals used first-to-four-game sets, so the set Cerúndolo took and the 4-3 finish do not translate directly into how either man would hold a conventional best-of-three at a Masters 1000. It does establish that Cerúndolo, the only player to take a set off Alcaraz at that event, has at least once stayed with him in a short format where a single break decides a set. Because the format was so different, the current tactical picture is effectively unknown: the two have never traded shots in a standard-scoring match at tour level. The limitation is the four-and-a-half-year gap, which makes the 2021 result illustrative rather than predictive.
- The only previous meeting was at the 2021 Next Gen Finals, won by Alcaraz 4-0 4-1 2-4 4-3
- Cerúndolo was the only player to take a set off Alcaraz at that event
- That event used first-to-four-game sets, so Shanghai will be their first meeting in conventional scoring

Alcaraz's own account is that the autumn stretch has historically been his weakest part of the year and that he starts this event clear-headed after the Tokyo title. That matters for this fixture because the second round is his first match at the tournament, and how quickly he settles on a slower hard court is the genuinely unknown part of the matchup. The counterweight is that Cerúndolo already has competitive time and a win on these courts, while Alcaraz arrives without a match here this year. The limitation is that a player's stated freshness is self-assessment, not a measurable condition.
- Alcaraz said he felt mentally fresh after the Tokyo title
- He said he feels ready to compete for another trophy in China
- He described this stage of the season as one that had not been his best in previous years
