Context last updated 8 Oct 2026, 15:44 · Europe/Bucharest

Khachanov, seeded 26th and ranked No. 27, meets first-time opponent Fery, whose hard-court form and Shanghai first-round serving make this closer than the ranking gap suggests.

Khachanov is still the likelier winner, but his 1.44 price does not justify it, while Fery to win at 2.75, Fery 2-0 at 4.75, Fery for the opening set at 2.4 and straight sets at 1.5 all carry a positive case.

Context

Fery's 7-6(2) 6-1 win was his first tour-level victory since August, and he won it behind 83% of first serves in and nine of ten service games held. He held his level through a tight opening tie-break, which is the part of his game this match will press hardest. The counterweight is the opponent: Čilić, 38, was playing his first match since mid-August, so the win establishes Fery's current ball-striking against a rusty veteran rather than against a seeded player.
- Fery won 7-6(2) 6-1 against Marin Čilić in the Shanghai first round
- He landed 83% of first serves (50 of 60), held 9 of 10 service games and hit 6 aces
- The win was his first at tour level since August 2026

Khachanov has not played since his 4 October Beijing loss to Hubert Hurkacz, while Fery played and won on 7 October, so the seed's bye has produced a five-day gap against a two-day turnaround. That gap carries more weight on a slow, humid hard court, where longer exchanges accumulate. The difference is real but modest: Fery is 24, has played only one match here, and finished it in straight sets.
- Khachanov's last match was a 7-6(2) 6-2 Beijing quarter-final loss to Hubert Hurkacz on 4 October
- Fery beat Marin Čilić on 7 October, two days before this match
- Khachanov's main-tour hard-court record is 208-157 against Fery's 7-7
ConfirmedSources checked 8 Oct 2026, 15:41 · Europe/BucharestTennisTemple match pageen.tennistemple.com · 8 Oct 2026
That is the strongest recent evidence for Khachanov's level on a hard court going into Shanghai: a straight-sets win over a top-10 opponent without needing a tie-break. It also frames how his 4 October exit should be read, since Beijing was his last competitive tennis before this match, five days earlier. Fery's much shorter tour-level hard-court record (7-7) gives less to compare against, so the gap in experience rather than a head-to-head history is the starting point here.
- 30 September 2026: Khachanov beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-3 6-3 in Beijing
- Auger-Aliassime was ranked No. 6 at the time of the match
- Khachanov was ranked No. 27 going into the Shanghai second round
Seven Shanghai appearances have produced no run beyond the third round, so this is a venue where Khachanov's results have repeatedly undershot his standing. He was ranked inside the top 10 a year ago and sits at No. 27 now, which makes a section he has never converted the more notable. The pattern spans seven separate draws rather than one bad week, and his Beijing quarter-final run this month gives it a current, better-form reference point.
- Seven Shanghai appearances without a run past the third round
- Ranked inside the top 10 twelve months ago, now No. 27 with a live ranking of No. 25
