Pre-match view

Context last updated 8 Oct 2026, 03:13 · Europe/Bucharest

Swiatek has won both previous meetings and 12 of her last 14 hard-court matches, so she is the likely winner of this Beijing quarterfinal; Mertens arrives off a straight-set win over Gauff but has needed three sets twice.

The 1.22 on Swiatek gives nothing back, and the quotes on her set wins, a two-set match and a short match are all shorter than the form justifies. Mertens +2.5 games at 3.2 is the one quote with room.

Context

Mertens arrives at her first China Open quarterfinal after beating the fourth-ranked Gauff 6-3 6-3 in roughly 80 minutes, a first win in six attempts against an opponent who had won all five previous meetings. It is her best result in seven visits to Beijing and her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal since Madrid in 2021, so she is producing a level she has rarely sustained at this tier. The specific limitation is that Gauff described herself as drained after a difficult week and finished with 33 unforced errors and eight double faults, so the scoreline overstates how much Mertens had to do.
- Mertens beat Coco Gauff 6-3 6-3 in the China Open fourth round
- It was Mertens' first win over Gauff in six meetings
- The result is Mertens' best in seven appearances at the China Open
- It is her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal since Madrid in 2021

Swiatek reached the quarterfinals by beating Xinyu Gao and then the 18-year-old Iva Jovic 6-1 6-3, a result that took her to a 31st WTA 1000 quarterfinal. The exception in her route was a second-round match against Donna Vekic in which she lost the opening set and trailed 5-2 in the second before recovering to win 4-6 7-6(0) 6-2. Two of her three Beijing matches have been far more comfortable than Mertens' three-set battles, which leaves her with the lighter workload going into Friday.
- Swiatek beat Iva Jovic 6-1 6-3 in the round of 16
- The win is Swiatek's 31st WTA 1000 quarterfinal
- Swiatek reached the quarterfinals of the China Open

Swiatek leads the career head-to-head 2-0 and Mertens has never beaten her, which is the only direct tour-level evidence between the pair. Mertens, though, arrives with her best Beijing result and a first win in six attempts against a top-five opponent, so her current level is stronger than in previous meetings between them. The record points to Swiatek, and Mertens' week in Beijing is the reason the quarterfinal is not simply a repeat of past outcomes.
- Swiatek leads the career head-to-head against Mertens 2-0
- Mertens has never beaten Swiatek
ConfirmedSources checked 8 Oct 2026, 03:11 · Europe/BucharestWTAwww.wtatennis.com · 7 Oct 2026
Mertens has needed three sets in both of her completed Beijing wins. She led Katie Volynets 6-0 3-0 and held chances to lead 4-0 in the second set before falling behind a break in the decider and winning 6-0 4-6 7-5 in just under three hours, then came from 0-2 down in the third set to beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-2 3-6 6-3 in two hours 16 minutes. The pattern is a player winning tight matches rather than controlling them, and the accumulated court time is the clearest observable difference between the two players before this quarterfinal.
- Mertens beat Katie Volynets 6-0 4-6 7-5 in just under three hours after leading 6-0 3-0 and holding chances to lead 4-0 in the second set
- Mertens beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-2 3-6 6-3 in two hours 16 minutes
- Mertens trailed 0-2 in the deciding set against Ostapenko before winning six of the last seven games
