Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 15:35 · Europe/Bucharest

Gauff has won all five meetings with Mertens and is 13-2 on hard in her last 15 completed matches, but Mertens needed three sets in both Beijing wins and their only 2026 meeting went to a decider.

Gauff should win, most likely in two sets. Her 1.22 match price is not worth backing; three sets at 2.6, Gauff 2-1 at 3.8, over 21.5 games at 2.2 and Mertens +5.5 games at 1.73 are the prices that hold up.

Context

The disruption arrived with Gauff a game from losing the first set to a debutant playing at home, and she needed 1 hour 29 minutes rather than a routine straight-set afternoon to reach this round. That makes her route into the fourth round more disruptive than the scoreline implies and is the only evidence available on how she handled a home crowd against her in Beijing this week. The reaction was to the review decision rather than to Mertens, and nothing indicates the episode carried beyond that match.
- Gauff won 7-5, 6-1 in 1 hour 29 minutes to reach the Beijing fourth round.
- Gauff won nine of the last 10 games of the match.
- A point was replayed after courtside electronic boards flickered mid-rally, and the replay drew boos from the crowd.
- Sun Xinran, 16, was playing her WTA main-draw debut on a wild card after winning the US Open girls' title.

Beijing is where Gauff's results have been most repeatable: two losses in 18 matches and no exit before the semifinals, including the 2024 title. She is seeded third again and the fourth round is a round she has always cleared. The record spans different editions and opponents, so it describes the venue and the stakes rather than offering a read on Mertens specifically.
- Gauff is 16-2 at the China Open.
- Gauff has never lost before the semifinals in Beijing.
- Gauff won the 2024 China Open title.
- Her third-round win improved her season record to 47-14.

Mertens was two games from going out against Ostapenko before she won six of the last seven games, and it is the second time in three days she has gone the distance after a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 opener. Both her Beijing matches have run to three sets, while Gauff's third round lasted 1 hour 29 minutes in straight sets, which is the clearest asymmetrical workload signal in the fixture. Whatever the extra match time is worth has to sit against a head-to-head Mertens has never won.
- Mertens beat Jelena Ostapenko 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the third round.
- Mertens trailed 2-0 in the deciding set and won six of the last seven games of the match.
- It was her first run of consecutive China Open wins, taking her to the Beijing fourth round.
- Her opening win in Beijing was also a three-setter, 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 against Katie Volynets.
ConfirmedSources checked 6 Oct 2026, 15:32 · Europe/BucharestSportskeedawww.sportskeeda.com · 6 Oct 2026
The 5-0 head-to-head reads as one-sided, but the only meeting this season is the one in which Mertens held three match points and still lost. It is the single most recent data point on the matchup and the only one from this calendar year, which is why it tempers the bare win-loss count. No detailed records of the four earlier meetings are available here, so this Dubai match is the best available guide to how close the pair has been.
- Gauff has won all five matches between them.
- Their most recent meeting came at the 2026 Dubai Tennis Championships.
- Gauff saved three match points in that match.
- Dubai is their only meeting so far in 2026.
