Pre-match view

Context last updated 8 Oct 2026, 15:09 · Europe/Bucharest

Cobolli, the No. 7 seed, opens against 38-year-old Mannarino but has not won a match since 3 September; Mannarino has won only three matches in nine Shanghai visits.

Cobolli is the likelier winner, and several prices carry an edge: Cobolli 2-1 at 3.8 and Mannarino +3.5 games at 1.73 are clearest, with Over 24.5 games and Over 2.5 sets at 2.3 and Cobolli to win at 1.45 smaller. The Cobolli -1.5 and -3.5 handicaps ask more than his recent margins justify.

Context

Shanghai is one of the last Masters 1000 stops before the ATP Finals, and Cobolli holds 3,530 race points with roughly 200 to spare over the group directly behind him, so a deep run here protects a first career Finals place while an opening loss would let the field close most of the gap. The standing also carries a limitation, because he has not won a match since early September, which means his position reflects the first half of the season more than his current level. Reaching the second week would put real distance between him and the chasing pack.
- Cobolli holds 3,530 race points, fifth in the standings as of, about 200 clear of the group behind him.
- Stefano Cobolli said his son is training very well and cares a lot about the objective of reaching Turin.
- Zverev and Alcaraz have already qualified, and Sinner's season-ending withdrawal has opened the remaining places.

The win removed five straight first-round defeats at Masters 1000 level and was his first at that tier in seven months, and because the match ended at 2-2 in the second set it left him with almost no mileage on court before the second round. That is a contrast with an opponent who has not competed since 1 October and arrives on a losing run. The 49 minutes are also thin evidence about his form, since the match never reached a conclusion on court.
- The first-round match ended after 49 minutes when Basilashvili retired at 6-3 2-2.
- It was Mannarino's first Masters 1000 win since March.
- He had lost his previous five Masters 1000 first-round matches.

Cobolli has played four matches since the start of September and won one of them, then arrived in Beijing after a training block rather than a heavy schedule and lost in straight sets to Roman Safiullin, which removes fatigue as an explanation. For a top-10 player opening a Masters 1000 against a 38-year-old ranked 83, that run is the main argument against treating the ranking gap as decisive. The sequence is short, but all three defeats came against lower-ranked opponents.
- Cobolli's last win came in the second round of the US Open on 3 September.
- He lost his Beijing opener to Roman Safiullin 6-3 6-2 on 1 October.
- Every defeat in that sequence came against a lower-ranked opponent.

Cobolli is the higher-ranked player, but his recent hard-court wins have not been quick: each of the four needed a third set, while his three defeats came in straight sets. For this second round it points to a contest that may well stretch beyond two sets rather than a comfortable passage. Seven matches is a small sample, so it describes a recent habit rather than a settled rule.
- Cobolli's hard-court best-of-three set sample covers 7 matches from 4 August to 1 October 2026.
- Scorelines in that sample: four 2-1 wins and three 0-2 defeats, with 2 matches featuring a tiebreak.
- Averages in the sample: 2.57 sets and 25.9 total games per match.
