Pre-match view

Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 04:03 · Europe/Bucharest

Shanghai's first round pits Struff's steadier hard-court record against a Landaluce who has lost six of his last eight on the surface, with the winner drawn to face Medvedev.

Struff's higher ranking, his 7-7 recent record and his three-set win in their only meeting make him the likelier winner, though the margin is small. At 2.00 he is the one quoted price worth taking; Landaluce at 1.80 is one to pass.

Context

Those 14 matches produced 89 double faults and only 236 points won on second serve from 502 played.
The second serve is the part of Landaluce's game opponents can attack, since under half of those points went his way across the sample. Handing over that many free points makes holding serve harder in a first-round match where he starts as the underdog, though the sample is not limited to hard courts.
- 6.4 double faults per match across 14 tracked matches, 89 in total
- 47.0% of second-serve points won, 236 of 502, across 14 tracked matches
- 59.4% of first serves in, 733 of 1235, across 14 tracked matches
A Masters 1000 first round offers no lower-tier warm-up, and the draw rewards the winner only with a seeded opponent in Medvedev rather than any easing of the field. That second-round prospect is live for both men: Struff beat Medvedev in straight sets on grass at Wimbledon in July, then lost to him 6-4 6-3 on a hard court in Beijing on 3 October. Because neither player has faced the other in these conditions, the opening match is where each man's current hard-court level gets established rather than assumed.
- The Shanghai draw places Landaluce and Struff in the same first-round match
- Main-draw first-round play begins Wednesday 7 October at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena
- The winner is drawn to face Daniil Medvedev in the second round
- Landaluce enters the Shanghai main draw for the first time

A single previous meeting carries limited predictive weight for a hard-court match: it was played on grass, the surface that suits the serve and early forehand of a 193cm first-strike player most, and Landaluce still took a set from Struff before losing the decider 7-5. Nothing in the record shows how the matchup behaves on a hard court, where the higher, truer bounce changes what a returner can do against that serve. What Mallorca does establish is that the two are close enough for the match to reach a final set, and that Landaluce could break Struff on a surface that rewards his serve more than Shanghai's courts do.
- Their only recorded meeting was at the 2026 Mallorca Championships in June
- Struff won it 6-3 1-6 7-5 on grass
- No hard-court meeting between the two is recorded

The Beijing exit removed Landaluce's route to main-draw match time in the Asian swing's opening week and left him without a completed match since, while Struff was still competing in Beijing on 3 October. The duration and the two saved match points matter because they frame the defeat as narrow against a player ranked No. 90 rather than a collapse in level, with the decisive tiebreak going 7-2. The offsetting point is that a nine-day gap removes accumulated fatigue for a first-round match, though it also means he opens against a hard-serving opponent with only two wins in his eight most recent tracked hard-court matches.
- Trungelliti beat Landaluce 6-1 6-7(9) 7-6(2) in Beijing qualifying
- The match lasted two hours 40 minutes
- Landaluce saved two match points in the second-set tiebreak before losing the deciding tiebreak 7-2
- Landaluce was the fourth seed in the Beijing qualifying draw
