Navone and Carreno-Busta open in Shanghai, the higher-ranked Navone holding the only head-to-head win while Carreno-Busta arrives as the fresher, faster starter on hard courts.

Navone is the likelier winner. At 1.95 his price gives nothing extra; Carreno-Busta at 1.85 and Under 2.5 sets at 1.5 are prices to leave, and Over 2.5 sets at 2.3 is the one price with a clear edge.

Context

The Djokovic win is the strongest available evidence that Navone can hold a high level on a hard court, and he confirmed it by beating Berrettini in the next round before Etcheverry stopped him. It matters in this fixture because Carreno-Busta does not hit with the depth or pace Djokovic does, so Navone's task shifts from absorbing pressure to generating his own in rallies. The limitation is that the run stands alone: his only completed match since is a straight-sets defeat, so it reads as a high ceiling rather than a settled hard-court level.
- Navone beat Novak Djokovic 7-6 5-7 4-6 6-2 6-1 in the 2026 US Open first round, recovering from two sets to one down; it was Djokovic's first opening-round defeat at the US Open in 20 years.
- Navone then beat Matteo Berrettini 3-6 6-3 6-4 7-6 before losing to Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets in the third round.

Carreno-Busta needed qualifying to enter a 500-level main draw and then could not take a set off a top-10 opponent, which frames his Shanghai entry at a lower level than the one his career-high No. 10 and seven tour-level titles represent. The two qualifying wins show his base level still holds against lower-ranked opposition, including a left-handed veteran in Mannarino. For this match the practical point is that he carries three matches of hard-court rhythm from the past week, but his best recent wins came against players outside the top 60.
- Carreno-Busta came through two rounds of 2026 China Open qualifying with straight-set wins over Yi Zhou and Adrian Mannarino, his first matches in almost a month after an opening-round US Open loss to Jiri Lehecka on 30 August.
- Daniil Medvedev beat him 6-4 6-2 in the Beijing first round, breaking in both sets.

Carreno-Busta's opening sets have been the strongest part of his recent hard-court play.
An early lead is the clearest route for the lower-ranked man to control this first-round match, and the opening set is where his recent record is better than Navone's two wins from seven. Six matches is a small sample, so this is a lean rather than a settled rate, and two retired matches were left out of it.
- Carreno-Busta won four of six opening sets in hard-court best-of-three matches tracked from 4 August to 2 October 2026.
- He averaged 5.8 games to 4.2 across those opening sets, with one tiebreak in the six-match sample.
- Two retired matches were excluded from that sample.
Shanghai runs a 96-player draw in which the leading seeds enter in the second round, so both men start in the first round as unseeded entrants. The reward for the winner is a second-round match against Tabilo rather than a top seed, which makes the opener the more winnable half of the immediate assignment for each. The draw gives neither player an edge in preparation or rest: both arrive from the same tournament week in Beijing and play on the same outdoor hard court, so the path itself does not separate them.
- The 2026 Rolex Shanghai Masters main draw, published, paired Navone and Carreno-Busta in the first round and placed Alejandro Tabilo in the following round.
