Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 7 Oct 2026, 15:17 · Europe/Bucharest

The tension is a 64-place ranking gap meeting the form book: Cerundolo is No. 55 but has lost his last two hard-court matches on the China swing, while Mejia arrives from qualifying.

Cerundolo is the more likely winner. Mejia at 2.75 is the only quoted price that qualifies as potential value; Cerundolo at 1.45, under 2.5 sets and the second set at 1.50, under 23.5 games at 1.65 and Cerundolo 2-0 at 2.10 all ask for more than the evidence supports.

Context

Alcaraz, the third seed, enters the 96-player Shanghai draw at the second-round stage, so the winner of this first-round match goes straight into a meeting with the highest-ranked player in this section. That makes the reward unusually immediate for an opening match at a Masters 1000 and frames the occasion for two players outside the top 50. The draw does not change the level either player must produce to win here; it guarantees the survivor a clear step up in opponent quality next round.
- Quien gane se convertirá en el primer rival de Carlos Alcaraz
- En segunda ronda, espera Carlos Alcaraz por el ganador
- en caso de ganar, jugará ante Carlos Alcaraz

Mejia won two qualifying matches in Shanghai on 5 and, beating Chun Hsin Tseng and then Michael Zheng 6-3 6-4, so he arrives having already played competitively on site while Cerundolo has not competed since 30 September. The extra matches carry a cost as well: qualifying entrants reach the main draw with more accumulated court time and less recovery than a direct entrant. The run delivers a first main draw at this event and a third career ATP Masters 1000 main draw, a step up in level rather than an established record at this tier.

That split matters in a best-of-3 first round, where a dropped opening set leaves little room to recover. Cerundolo's 7-3 second-set record over ten matches from 4 August to 30 September sits against Mejia's 3-8 over eleven matches from 25 July to 6 October, though both samples are small and the first sets have been close, Cerundolo 4-6 and Mejia 4-7.
- Cerundolo won 7 of 10 second sets in completed hard-court best-of-3 matches between 4 August and 30 September 2026.
- He won 4 of 10 first sets across the same ten matches.
- He averaged 23.0 total games and 2.3 sets per match in that window.
That shape cuts both ways in a best-of-3 first round: Mejia has repeatedly extended matches to a deciding set, which is the main risk to a short straight-set finish, but he has also been beaten without winning a set in five of eleven matches. The sample covers 25 July to 6 October and is small, so this is a lean rather than a settled habit.
- Four of Mejia's five hard-court wins in the tracked window finished 2-1.
- Five of his eleven completed hard-court best-of-3 matches between 25 July and 6 October 2026 were 0-2 defeats.
- Only one of the eleven ended 2-0 in his favour.
