No. 220 and third seed Cadenasso against No.

390 Giunta, with Cadenasso's back retirement on 2 October still the open question in this Palermo round of 16. His ranking makes him the likelier winner, but Giunta to win the match at 2.6 is the price worth considering, and Cadenasso at 1.45 asks for more than his recent clay form supports.

Context

Cadenasso retired from his match against Vitaliy Sachko after a medical time-out for treatment on his back, with the match abandoned in the third set. He returned four days later and completed a three-set opening win in Palermo, which shows he is able to compete but gives no information about the severity of the problem. A back-related retirement inside the last two weeks is the most concrete current physical signal in this matchup, and it becomes more relevant the longer the round of 16 runs. The counterpoint is that he has already played and won since arriving in Palermo, so nothing here establishes that he is compromised for this match.
- Cadenasso retired from his match against Vitaliy Sachko with the match abandoned in the third set.
- A medical time-out was taken for treatment on his back during that match.
- Cadenasso returned on 6 October and won a three-set opening round in Palermo.

Cadenasso is the third seed and world No. 220, yet he needed three sets and a comeback from a set down to beat a qualifier ranked No. 856, winning 3-6 6-4 6-3. Moroni had already won qualifying matches on the same clay, which gives the slow start a concrete explanation, and Cadenasso recovered the match without needing to rescue it from a deficit in the deciding set. The limitation is that one three-set opener against a lower-ranked opponent is thin evidence in either direction; it mainly shows the higher-ranked seed could not shorten the match on this surface.
- Cadenasso, the third seed and world No. 220, beat qualifier Filippo Moroni 3-6 6-4 6-3.
- The win came in the opening round of the 53rd Campionati Internazionali di Sicilia.
- Moroni had come through qualifying at the same venue.

Giunta, 22 and ranked No. 390, lost the opening set to a home wild card before winning 4-6 6-4 6-1, and the third set was by far the most one-sided. Beating a wild card carrying local support is a genuine obstacle for a player outside the top 350, and the way he closed the match suggests he adjusted as it went on. The counterweight is Basile's ranking of No. 521, so this establishes progression through the draw rather than form against seeded opposition, which is what the round of 16 against Cadenasso will demand.
- Giunta, 22 and ranked No. 390, beat wild card Pierluigi Basile 4-6 6-4 6-1.
- The win put him into the Palermo round of 16 against Cadenasso.
- Basile is ranked No. 521.

This is a Challenger 50 on outdoor clay at Ct Palermo, the lowest tier on the ATP Challenger circuit, and the draw reflects that: top seed Zdenek Kolar, second seed Lorenzo Giustino and third seed Cadenasso all sit outside the top 190. Ranking points and prize money are modest, so the round of 16 matters mainly to players trying to consolidate a place near the top 200 rather than to tour-level regulars. The clay surface and an outdoor setting at a long-established club are the conditions both players face, and the 11 October final is the reference point for the week.
- The 53rd Campionati Internazionali di Sicilia is an ATP Challenger 50 event played on clay at Ct Palermo.
- The prize fund is 56,700 euros and the final is scheduled for Sunday 11 October at 16:00.
- The draw is headed by top seed Zdenek Kolar, second seed Lorenzo Giustino and third seed Cadenasso.
