Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 02:21 · Europe/Bucharest

Tamara Korpatsch is the No. 2 seed and 309 places above Jia-Jing Lu, but she has lost three straight and dropped every first set in five completed hard-court matches.

Lu, a lucky loser here, has won 10 of her 13 first sets. Korpatsch is the likelier match winner; the one price that offers something is Lu to win the first set at 2.5. The 1.45 for a straight-sets finish is best avoided.

Context

Korpatsch's three-match losing run and 1-4 hard-court record sit against Lu's 8-5 hard record and 10-3 first sets, so the opening phase is contested even though the ranking gap is wide. With no head-to-head and no confirmed availability concerns, the conditions shape the match rather than deciding it.

Lu's edge in this matchup sits in the opening set rather than across the whole match.
Lu's 10-3 first-set record is the strongest part of an 8-5 hard-court run, and only two of those 13 opening sets went to a tiebreak, so the advantage came from winning games rather than edging shootouts. Against a higher-ranked opponent whose own starts have been poor, the first set is the phase where she can realistically take something from the match. The sample is small and covers 30 August to 5 October 2026, so it describes a recent pattern rather than a settled level.
- Hard-court sample: 13 completed matches, 30 August 2026 to 5 October 2026
- First sets in that sample: 10 wins, 3 losses, averaging 5.38 games won and 3.38 lost
- Two of the 13 first sets reached a tiebreak
- She won 18 of 30 sets (60%) in the same sample
Korpatsch's slow starts on hard are the part of her recent record most likely to matter in this first round.
Korpatsch's hard-court picture rests on five completed matches, with two matches that ended in retirement excluded, so this is a short record rather than a firm statement of her level. Inside it the shape is consistent: heavy opening-set defeats followed by a better second set, and her one win came in three sets. For this match it suggests a slow start is more likely than a fast one, which is where a wide ranking gap can look narrower than it is.
- Hard-court sample: 5 completed matches, 3 August 2026 to 30 September 2026, with 2 retirements excluded
- First sets in that sample: 0 wins, 5 losses, averaging 2.0 games won and 6.0 lost
- Match record in the sample: 1 win, 4 losses
- Second sets: 2 wins, 3 losses, with two tiebreaks
Lu's 8-5 hard-court record carries a wide range of results inside it.
Lu's 13-match hard-court record is 8-5, but the spread inside it is wide, and this was the low end: two games against an opponent ranked outside the top 150. Korpatsch sits at No. 53 and is seeded second here, so a similar scoreline is possible if Lu's level drops. The same period also shows Lu winning the opening set far more often than not, which is why this match is not a foregone conclusion.
- 30 September 2026: lost 0-6 2-6 to Alexandra Shubladze (ranked No. 163) on hard
- Two games won, 12 lost, in straight sets
