Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 1 Oct 2026, 15:51 · Europe/Bucharest

Darderi is the higher-ranked player and has just swept the sixth seed, but he has lost the first set in six of his last seven hard-court matches, and Jacquet has taken it in 8 of 13.

Darderi to win the match at 1.73, Jacquet to win the first set at 2.0 and Over 2.5 sets at 2.3 all offer something; Under 22.5 games at 1.9 does not.

Context

Jacquet arrived in Tokyo with top-100 form and converted it into a 54-minute straight-sets win over a former world No. 4. The result carries a qualification: Rune had not played a tour-level match in roughly a year after an Achilles rupture, so the scoreline reflects an opponent still finding match rhythm as much as a gap in level. In practice it leaves Jacquet a short first match and a place in the second round with little added fatigue.
- Rune, now ranked No. 188, was playing his first tour-level match in about a year after rupturing his left Achilles in October 2025.
- Jacquet is ranked No. 86 and advanced to a second-round meeting with Luciano Darderi.

Jacquet's rise to No. 86 traces to a first ATP semifinal in Hangzhou in late September 2026, his deepest run at tour level. Entering Tokyo as a special exempt meant skipping qualifying and starting the event already inside the main draw. It frames why an unseeded French player is meeting a top-20 opponent in the second round of a 500 rather than exiting early, and it shows a run of main-draw results rather than a one-off upset.
- The Hangzhou run directly preceded his Tokyo first round and underpins his rise to No. 86.
- He entered the Japan Open as a special exempt rather than through qualifying.

Darderi took the first-set tiebreak and closed out a straight-sets win over the sixth seed, a notable hard-court result for a player who lists clay as his preferred surface. Ruud was a Tokyo semifinalist last year, so this was a seeded opponent rather than a soft first-round draw. The match still ran about 1 hour 50 minutes, meaning Darderi arrives in the second round having been tested across two tight sets.
- Ruud was the No. 6 seed and a Tokyo semifinalist in 2025.
- Darderi needed about 1 hour 50 minutes for the straight-sets win, his 36th match win of 2026.

Darderi reached the Tokyo second round by taking the first set off Casper Ruud, against a sample that shows him usually losing it.
Jacquet has taken the first set in 8 of his 13 hard-court best-of-three matches since 1 August 2026, so the opening set is where these two records pull hardest against each other. The counterweight is Darderi's 7-6(3) first set against Ruud in the Tokyo first round and his No. 19 ranking against Jacquet's No. 86; seven matches of set results do not settle a second-round match on their own.
- Darderi won set one in 1 of 7 hard-court best-of-three matches between 6 August and 1 October 2026, losing it in 6.
- He won set two in 4 of that same 7-match sample.
- Two retired matches were excluded from the seven-match set sample.
