Context last updated 1 Oct 2026, 22:25 · Europe/Bucharest

Porto's quarter-final is Grenier's first Challenger last-eight run of 2026 against Montes-De La Torre, the 23-year-old alternate who led second seed Fearnley 7-6(4), 3-0 when Fearnley retired.

Montes-De La Torre, ranked 228 to Grenier's 284 and 9-4 on hard courts, is the likelier winner. Neither quoted price is worth taking: 1.6 on Montes-De La Torre demands more than his record supports, and 2.2 on Grenier no better.

Context

Montes-De La Torre, 23, entered the main draw as an alternate and has now removed the tournament's second seed, Jacob Fearnley, ranked No. 94, one round after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Luca Potenza. Fearnley retired at 7-6(4), 3-0, so the advance is established while the evidence about Montes-De La Torre's level across a completed match against top-100 opposition stays thinner than the result suggests. Practically, the early finish also leaves him with considerably less time on court than a full two-set match would have demanded entering the quarterfinal.
- Montes-De La Torre beat Luca Potenza 6-3, 6-2 in the Porto first round.
- He led second seed Jacob Fearnley 7-6(4), 3-0 when Fearnley retired, putting him in the quarterfinals.
- Fearnley was ranked No. 94 and seeded second in Porto.
- Montes-De La Torre appeared in the draw as an alternate entrant.

Montes-De La Torre, 23 and ranked 228, has been beaten by a much lower-ranked opponent inside this hard-court stretch.
The three-set loss to a player ranked 654 sits inside a six-match stretch that otherwise brought five wins, so it does not overturn Montes-De La Torre's 9-4 hard-court record over 13 completed matches from 26 August to 30 September 2026. It is a reminder that his recent wins came against lower-ranked opponents and that the gap to Grenier, No. 284, is narrower than it looks.
- Alec Deckers, ranked 654, beat Montes-De La Torre 7-5, 4-6, 3-6 on 27 September 2026 on hard court.
- Montes-De La Torre won 14 games to Deckers' 17 across three sets.
Grenier, 30 and a former world No. 95 now ranked 284, had not reached a Challenger quarterfinal in 2026 before this week, so the Porto run is a modest upturn against his own recent record. Both wins came on hard court against opponents ranked 290 and 339, a level below Montes-De La Torre at No. 228, which caps how much the sequence says about his form against higher-ranked opposition. The value is context about a former top-100 player rebuilding his season rather than a decisive shift in the matchup.
- Grenier beat Carl Emil Overbeck 6-4, 6-2 in the Porto first round.
- Grenier beat Tiago Pereira 7-6(8), 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
- The run is his first Challenger quarterfinal of the 2026 season.

Montes-De La Torre played five matches at the M25 in Setúbal the week before Porto, reaching the final, so he arrives at this Challenger immediately off a full competitive week. That volume supports his hard-court rhythm but also stacks workload ahead of a quarterfinal. His time on court in Porto has been short — a straight-set first round and a second round cut off by Fearnley's retirement — which offsets part of the earlier load.
- Montes-De La Torre reached the final of the M25 in Setúbal in the week before the Porto Challenger.
- He was the top seed at Setúbal and beat sixth seed Lui Maxted during the run.
