Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 30 Sep 2026, 19:16 · Europe/Bucharest

Starodubtseva is the higher-ranked player and the likelier winner, but she arrives in Beijing after nearly four weeks without a completed match and a 4-5 hard-court record in this window.

Charaeva's second serve is the softest part of the contest, and her recent hard-court matches have often run long. Starodubtseva at 1.65 asks more than the form supports; the 2.3 for the match to reach a deciding set is the one price that offers something.

Context

Rybakina is the No. 1 seed and holds a first-round bye, so the winner of this match goes directly into a second-round meeting with the highest seed in the draw. That gives an opener between two players outside the top 60 an unusually large immediate reward and makes the following round part of the occasion. The draw is the only link between the two players here: neither has played in Beijing this week, so both arrive on the same outdoor hard courts without on-site match play behind them.
- Draw listing: Yuliia Starodubtseva vs Alina Charaeva in the first round, with Elena Rybakina [1] on a bye in the same part of the draw.
- Projected path for Rybakina: first-round bye, then Starodubtseva or Charaeva in the second round.
ConfirmedSources checked 30 Sep 2026, 19:14 · Europe/Bucharest
The Roland Garros result is the strongest win on Starodubtseva's 2026 record and shows she can beat the player seeded first in Beijing. It matters directly because the winner of this match meets Rybakina in round two. The counterweight is surface and recency: the win came on clay, and Rybakina won their September hard-court meeting at the US Open in straight sets after a first-set tiebreak.
- US Open report after Rybakina's win over Starodubtseva: Rybakina avenged her Roland Garros defeat by Starodubtseva.
- Starodubtseva's win over Rybakina came on clay earlier in the 2026 season.
ConfirmedSources checked 30 Sep 2026, 19:14 · Europe/Bucharest
The comeback is the clearest recent evidence of Starodubtseva's level on hard courts and of her ability to close out a match from a losing position against a top-35 opponent. It sits a little under four weeks before this Beijing opener. The follow-up tempers it: Rybakina beat her in straight sets in the next round, and Starodubtseva has not completed a match since that 5 September defeat, so Beijing is her first competitive outing in nearly four weeks.
- US Open result: Starodubtseva beat Maria Sakkari 1-6 7-6(4) 6-2 after saving three match points.
- The win gave Starodubtseva her first US Open third round and her first third round at a hard-court Slam.
ConfirmedSources checked 30 Sep 2026, 19:14 · Europe/Bucharest
The scoreline shows Charaeva was competitive on hard courts in her most recent event, extending a higher-ranked opponent to a final-set tiebreak rather than going out early. It is also her only recent reference point, as she has not played since and comes into Beijing off roughly a week without match play. The level of that evidence is narrow because it came at a WTA 250 rather than at the 1000-level event she now enters.
- Korea Open round of 16: Anna Bondar d. Alina Charaeva 6-4 6-7(6) 7-6(5).
- The Seoul event was Charaeva's final tournament before the China Open.
