Lorenzo Giustino #210Italy11 – 2Matthew William Donald #460Czechia2

Donald, 21, came through qualifying and has now played on three consecutive days at Bari, including his first-round win over Olle Wallin . Against an opponent who has completed one match here, this second round is his fourth straight day of singles, so the accumulated load sits on the lower-ranked side of the pairing. He has dropped no sets in qualifying or in the main draw, which is the counterpoint to reading the extra matches as a problem. The wider picture is a ranking gap of more than 200 places, and the workload is the part of the setup that the rankings do not capture.

Giustino, the fourth seed here, needed three sets to get past a qualifier in his opening match . That matters because he has one completed match at this event while his opponent has played on three consecutive days, so a ranking gap of more than 200 places sits against an unusual difference in match load. Nearly all of his recent tracked matches are on clay, which fits a clay-court Challenger on Italian soil where he is the seeded player. The limitation is that one three-set win over a player ranked outside the top 600 does not show whether the longer match left anything behind.

Giustino is the higher-ranked, seeded player whose recent clay wins have tended to take the full three sets.

Six of his last 13 completed clay matches went the distance, and five of those were 2-1 wins, so a smooth straight-sets afternoon is not what his record shows. It also means his three-set first round here fits the pattern he has been running rather than standing out as an anomaly. The counterweight is that one of the 13 matches was a retirement and was excluded, and 13 matches is a small sample.

Donald, 21, is the qualifier ranked No. 460 whose recent clay record rests on a serve that lands often but wins few free points.

The numbers describe a serve that finds the box regularly but gives away cheap points: about one ace per match against 5.5 double faults, and only 47.3% of second-serve points won. Against a returner carrying a 250-place ranking edge, that profile points to longer service games and more rallies rather than quick holds. The sample is 15 clay matches, so it reflects his recent level rather than a fixed trait.
