Context last updated 23 Sep 2026, 09:23 · Europe/Bucharest

Blanch is the higher-ranked, better-rested player, but Donald owns the better clay record and arrives off a three-set win over No.

219 Cadenasso. Donald is the pick in what should be a close second-round match. The 2.4 on him to win, 2.2 on him for the first set and 3.8 on a 2-0 Donald win all carry an edge; Blanch at 1.55 to win the match needs far more than a 5-8 clay record suggests.

Context

Donald's win over a top-220 opponent is the strongest result in his Italian clay swing and earns him this second-round meeting with Blanch, a player ranked about 140 places above him. It matters because he showed he can close a long match from a losing position, dropping the second set before taking a 7-5 third. The limitation is that one opening-round win over a higher-ranked opponent is narrow evidence about his level on clay, a surface that is not his listed preference.
- Donald beat Gianluca Cadenasso 6-3 4-6 7-5 in the Genoa 2 first round .
- Cadenasso is ranked No. 219, roughly 250 places above Donald at No. 468.
- Blanch and Donald are scheduled to meet in the Genoa 2 second round .

Blanch won his opener 6-3 6-3 on 21 September and had a full rest day, while Donald's three-setter against Cadenasso ran into the evening of 22 September, leaving him less than 18 hours before this match. The gap matters on clay, where an extra set of court time typically carries a bigger recovery cost than on faster surfaces, and it is the only workload asymmetry between two players who otherwise entered the event on similar footing. The counterpoint is that a single three-set round is an ordinary load at Challenger level, so the advantage is marginal unless Donald's opener proved unusually draining.
- Blanch beat Sandro Kopp, No. 308, 6-3 6-3 in Genoa 2 on 21 September 2026.
- Donald's Genoa 2 first-round match was played on 22 September 2026, went to a third set and finished in the evening.
- The second-round match between Blanch and Donald is listed for on the Centrale court.

Blanch's clay results this summer are lopsided across sets: he has been outscored early and stronger afterwards.
Blanch has been the stronger second-set player and the weaker first-set player of the two on clay, while Donald's 9-of-15 first-set record is the better of the pair, so the opening set is where the two records pull hardest against each other.
- Blanch won 6 of 13 clay first sets and 8 of 13 clay second sets across 13 clay matches from 23 June to 21 September 2026.
- His clay first sets average 4.6 games won and 4.8 lost; his second sets average 5.1 won and 3.8 lost.
Blanch has closed out matches quickly on clay and has not yet come through a deciding set in this sample.
Donald has won three of his eight clay matches in a third set, so a long match would be more familiar territory for him, while Blanch has yet to close one out across these 13 matches. The sample is small enough that it describes a pattern rather than a fixed limit.
- Blanch's clay scorelines from 23 June to 21 September 2026: five 2-0 wins, four 0-2 losses and four 1-2 losses.
- He has won 5 of 13 clay matches, all in straight sets, and lost all four of his three-setters.
