Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 28 Sep 2026, 00:55 · Europe/Bucharest

Chengdu's second semifinal pits two men in near-identical recent form: Hurkacz is 11-3 across his last 15 and has won five of their six meetings, while Shapovalov is 10-3 and has won 8 of 10 second sets on hard courts.

Hurkacz is the likelier winner, most probably in straight sets. The reviewed prices — 1.73 on Hurkacz, 2.10 on Shapovalov, 1.55 on a two-set match, 2.60 on Hurkacz 2-0 — ask for more than that form supports, so none is worth backing.

Context

A third semifinal in 2026 is the season's strongest marker for Shapovalov, who has otherwise been ranked in the 40s to 50s. It matters to this match because it frames him as a player in his best form of the year rather than a routine lower-ranked opponent. The caveat is his uneven week: two straight-set wins bracketed by the three-set comeback against Mannarino, so the level has fluctuated.
- Shapovalov recovered from a set down to beat Adrian Mannarino 6-7(6) 6-3 6-2 in Chengdu
- The result is his third tour-level semifinal of the 2026 season
- He advanced to the last four at the Chengdu Open

The Cancún title is the clearest sign that Hurkacz's game is working again on hard courts after his 2026 return, and he has followed it with a semifinal run in Chengdu. It matters here because it supports sustained hard-court form rather than a single result. The limitation is the level of the field: Cancún was a Challenger event, so the title is weaker evidence than his tour-level results this summer.
- Hurkacz won the Cancún title on hard court in August, beating Sebastián Báez 4-6 6-0 6-3 in the final
- Hurkacz lost a four-set US Open second-round match to Ben Shelton
- The Cancún event was a Challenger-level tournament

Hurkacz's record in this matchup is the most lopsided single element of the semifinal.
Five of the six meetings have gone Hurkacz's way, three of them needing more than two sets, so the series has been one-sided on results more than on length. Shapovalov's only win was a straight-set success in Miami in 2021, and Hurkacz has won all three meetings since. The record reaches back to 2019 and says nothing about current form, but it is the strongest single argument for Hurkacz on this court.
- 1 June 2024: Hurkacz beat Shapovalov 6-3 7-6(0) 4-6 6-1 in their most recent meeting
- Six career meetings between March 2019 and June 2024: five Hurkacz wins, one Shapovalov win
Shapovalov's second-set record is the set-level number that runs his way in this semifinal.
Shapovalov has won eight of ten second sets across his ten hard-court best-of-three matches tracked from 28 July to 27 September 2026, against Hurkacz's nine of twelve from 4 August to 27 September. The sample covers completed matches only and excludes two of his retirements. He has also lost four of his ten opening sets, so this second-set strength has often followed a slow start.
- 28 July to 27 September 2026: Shapovalov won 8 of 10 second sets in ten hard-court best-of-three matches
- Two retired matches are excluded from that ten-match sample
