Context last updated 24 Sep 2026, 15:16 · Europe/Bucharest

Shapovalov's serving carried him past Griekspoor while Kopriva had to grind past a wildcard ranked outside the top 2,000, yet Kopriva owns the only head-to-head.

Shapovalov is the likelier winner, but 1.22 asks for more than that result justifies. Better priced: Kopriva at 4.25, over 21.5 games at 2.00 and over 2.5 sets at 2.75.

Context

Shapovalov's serve carried the tightest part of the match: he held through a second set with no breaks and won the tie-break 7-3, taking his 2026 win count to 17. That matters here because Kopriva's own first round was a return-and-rally grind against a player ranked outside the top 2,000, and a serving performance of this kind gives Kopriva far fewer neutral points to build from. The limitation is that it was still a two-set match decided by a handful of points, which is evidence of a working serve rather than of a wider return or baseline level.
- Shapovalov beat Tallon Griekspoor 6-4 7-6(3) in the Chengdu Open first round .
- He served 11 aces, and the second set went to a tie-break without a break of serve.
- The win was his 17th of the 2026 season.
- Shapovalov is the seventh seed at the event and is ranked No. 50.

Kopriva had to grind past the lowest-ranked player in the draw and arrives with five wins in his last 15 matches. The step up is a different kind of test: Shapovalov served 11 aces in his own first round, and that first-strike pressure is the sort of tennis Kopriva's return has struggled with this summer, most visibly in a 6-3 6-4 6-0 US Open loss to Etcheverry. The counterweight is that Kopriva took the decisive games in both sets at 5-5 against Hu, so his scoring late in sets held up while a home crowd was backing his opponent.
- Kopriva, ranked No. 71, beat Hu Jia 6-4 7-5 in the Chengdu first round .
- Hu Jia, 17, is ranked No. 2,082 and was making his ATP Tour debut as a home wildcard.
- Each set was won by a single break.
- Czech coverage described Kopriva as having toiled for the win against the lowest-ranked player in the field.

Chengdu is one of the quicker hard-court stops of the season and has a long record of service dominance, which raises the value of the left-handed serve Shapovalov relied on in round one. Heat, humidity and roughly 500 metres of altitude add pace to the ball, so short points and big serving are rewarded more than in a slower, heavier hard-court week. The practical risk sits in scheduling rather than style: with no roof on the match courts and rain forecast, delays could bunch matches together and change how much rest either player carries into the next round.
- The Chengdu Open runs 23-29 September 2026 at the Sichuan International Tennis Center on outdoor hard courts.
- The event is among the quickest hard-court stops on the calendar and has historically rewarded strong serving.
- Conditions through the week are hot and humid, with roughly 500 metres of altitude adding pace to the ball.
- None of the three match courts has a roof and rain is forecast through the week.

Kopriva is the lower-ranked player in this second round but holds the only direct result between the pair.
It is a one-match sample from five years ago on clay, so it stands as a small counterweight to Shapovalov's better hard-court results rather than a guide to current form.
- The only head-to-head listed is dated 22 July 2021 and was won by Vit Kopriva 2-6 6-3 6-2.
- It is a one-match sample, played on clay five years before this hard-court fixture.

- Chengdu is a fast, high-altitude outdoor hard court, which favours Shapovalov's left-handed serve.
