Luca Staeheli #451Switzerland22 – 0Bruno Kuzuhara #663United States0

Kuzuhara won the 2022 Australian Open boys' singles title and has since fallen to No. 663, with college tennis at Clemson now the setting for most of his matches. That background explains the ranking and shapes the preparation: he played singles qualifying and doubles in Tulsa through before travelling to Ohio, leaving three days between competitive matches and no time on site before this one. The benefit is match sharpness from a run of competitive singles; the cost is a shorter recovery window than an opponent who has not competed since 20 September. The doubles also added physical load without adding to his singles match count.

Those four matches are the whole of Staeheli's hard-court evidence in the record, and one retirement is excluded from the sample.

Starting slowly has not stopped him winning half of them, because the two matches he took both went to a decider. It still means the early games have usually gone against him, which matters in a qualifying match where a single break can settle a set.

His 14 matches produced six 2-0 wins, three 2-1 wins and five 0-2 losses, averaging 2.21 sets per match.

The pattern is quick finishes rather than long contests, and six of those 14 matches still contained a tiebreak, so close sets have not always meant deciding sets. One retirement is excluded, and the sample ends a month before this match, which limits how firmly it describes his current level.

Arutiunian sits 143 ranking places below Staeheli, and neither set reached a tiebreak.

This is the most recent completed match in the record, seven days before this fixture. Against a player 143 places below him he won eight games across two sets, which is the freshest read on his hard-court level and sits awkwardly with the ranking gap that favours him here.
