Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 29 Aug 2026, 03:44 · Europe/Bucharest

Belinda Bencic is a strong favorite over Yulia Putintseva based on ranking, form, and hard-court performance.

The best betting value is on Over 20.5 total games and Over 9.5 games in set 1, while the match winner and handicap markets on Bencic are overpriced. Expect Bencic to win, but the match may be closer than the odds suggest.

Context

Bencic, 29, is ranked No. 12 and has won 15 hard-court matches this season. She retired at 3-6 down in her most recent outing.
The retirement came just two weeks before this Grand Slam start, and no subsequent match confirms she has recovered. If she is not fully fit, Putintseva could extend rallies and test her movement. However, Bencic's strong hard-court record this year suggests she may still be competitive if the issue was minor.
- Bencic retired at 3-6 against Lois Boisson on 2026-08-15 in Toronto.
- She has not played a completed match since then.
- Her 2026 hard-court record is 15-5, showing strong form before the retirement.
Putintseva, 31, is ranked No. 80 and has a career 56.6% win rate. Her recent hard-court sample is small but clearly negative.
In four hard-court matches this summer, she won only 25% and her first-serve points won dropped to 64%, below her career average. Against Bencic's strong return game, that could leave her vulnerable. However, the sample is only four matches, so her overall 2026 hard-court record of 11-10 suggests she can still compete.
- Putintseva is 1-3 on hard courts in her last four matches.
- Her first-serve percentage in those matches is 61.4%, down from her career 68%.
- She lost to Maya Joint, Liudmila Samsonova, and Shuai Zhang in that span.
Bencic and Putintseva have split six career meetings, but Bencic has won three of the last four.
Bencic's wins include a straight-set victory in their last meeting in December 2022. Putintseva's only win in that stretch came in 2019. The pattern suggests Bencic has had the upper hand recently, though the matches are spread across several years and surfaces.
- Bencic won 7-6(0) 6-3 in their last meeting on 2022-12-29.
- Bencic also won in 2020 and 2019; Putintseva's last win was in 2019.
- Overall head-to-head is tied 3-3.
The draw confirms this is a first-round match at the US Open, with Bencic seeded No. 12. This sets the stage but does not change expectations for the match itself.
- The official draw lists Belinda Bencic vs. Yulia Putintseva among the notable first-round matches.
- Bencic is listed as the No. 12 seed in the fourth quarter.

Markets to Avoid

High-risk markets where price or context leaves too little cushion.
