Sumit Nagal #281India22 – 0Benjamin Hassan #4970

Beating a seed ranked No. 154 is the strongest result of Hassan's week and the reason this second round is a contest rather than a formality for the higher-ranked player. The cost is schedule: he has played on 18, 19 and, including a three-setter in the main draw, while Nagal has completed one match in Lisbon and last competed on 14 October. His repeated qualifying runs this year also mean a ranking of No. 497 understates how much match play he is getting at this level. Three matches in three days is a genuine load, but it is also competitive rhythm that Nagal does not currently have.

Nagal's serve was never under pressure in his opener, facing no break points across two sets, which is the cleanest possible start on a surface where his 2026 results have fluctuated. The opponent's run to the Maia semifinals the week before means the win came against someone arriving with form rather than a soft draw. Against another qualifier ranked No. 497, a hold-based, low-error opener gives Nagal a repeatable platform. One match is not a trend, though, and his two most recent losses before this week both came in straight sets on clay.

That is the best win in Nagal's recent record and it came against a top-110 seed on the same Portuguese clay eight days before this match. It also explains the shape of his fortnight: a three-hour three-setter was followed by a straight-sets defeat to Mikrut the next day, so Maia ended with a heavy load and an early exit. Arriving in Lisbon with one clean, short match behind him is a lighter position than Hassan's three matches in three days. The limitation is that the Rocha win did not carry into the next round, so it marks a capacity for a big single performance rather than sustained form.
