Pedro Rodenas #633Spain00 – 2Benjamin Hassan #5002

Rodenas lost the opening set, turned the match in the second and was ahead 3-0 in the decider when Shelbayh stopped, so he arrives without having closed out a three-set win. The practical effect is an extended day: two full sets plus part of a third against a top-300 opponent, while Hassan was done in two sets. It also leaves the clearest read on Rodenas's level the 6-2 7-5 loss to Svyatoslav Gulin in the final qualifying round at Catania six days earlier. The limitation is that an opponent's retirement says nothing about Rodenas's ability to hold a lead against a fit opponent, which is what a qualifying decider asks of him.

Both men know the specific cost of this round: their most recent attempts to convert qualifying into a main-draw place ended inside two sets. Hassan responded by winning three qualifying matches, including a three-set win over the same Nijboer at Maia, while Rodenas's completed wins in the same period came against lower-ranked or unranked opposition before the Shelbayh retirement. Catania was a 50-level Challenger rather than a 100, so Rodenas's exit came against a weaker field than the one he faces now. The counterweight is that Hassan's qualifying wins came at 100-level events in the same country, so the level of opposition behind the two records differs.

Hassan, 31 and ranked No. 500, is winning at qualifying level and losing immediately once he reaches a main draw: two wins at Maia, then 6-3 6-2 against a seeded top-100 opponent. The wins over Taberner and Nijboer are the most recent evidence that he can win grinding clay matches against players ranked inside the top 450. That matters here because Rodenas is ranked No. 633, below both of those opponents, so the fixture asks Hassan to repeat what he has been doing in qualifying rather than what he has failed to do in main draws. The limitation is that the run is a week old and closed with a straight-sets loss to the only top-150 opponent he faced.

Starting well has been Rodenas's most reliable trait in this sample, and it is the part of his game that most directly challenges a higher-ranked opponent. The caveat is sample size and recency: 14 matches is a short window, and his latest completed match began with a 2-6 set against Gulin on 12 October. A fast start would not settle the match, but it is the clearest reason to expect him to be competitive early.
