Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 04:38 · Europe/Bucharest

Fearnley comes off a set-perfect run to the Olbia final, Gaston off a scrappy Roanne quarter-final, and the stronger hard-court form sits with the man ranked seven places lower.

Fearnley is the likelier winner, probably in straight sets. The 1.44 about Fearnley asks too much; the two prices with room are Gaston to win the match at 2.75 and Gaston to take the second set at 2.4.

Context

Neither man was originally scheduled to be in this main draw: both sat on the qualifying list and were moved up in the week before the event as higher-ranked entries came out. That means neither arrived with a protected seeding position, and the first round offers no ranking cushion for either of them. It also means both had their week re-planned at short notice, which is why their routes into Brussels look so different: Fearnley kept playing a Challenger in Sardinia while Gaston finished a Challenger in France. The entry-list records establish the timing of the promotions, not the full reason for each withdrawal.
- Both players were listed in Brussels qualifying before the withdrawals
- Fearnley and Gaston entered the main draw when Davidovich Fokina withdrew
- A further entry-list update reshaped the rest of the field
- The first-round draw paired Fearnley with Gaston

Four straight-set wins took Fearnley to a first Olbia final, his fourth final of the year and a third Challenger semi-final of the season, the clearest recent evidence that his level has come back after a difficult middle of the season. The route matters as much as the wins: no match went to a third set, so he reached the final with unusually low mileage for a five-match week. The counterweight is the opposition, ranked 191 to 374, which is well below what a tour-level first round presents. The step up comes against a left-hander who prolongs points, a different test from a 125 draw.
- Fearnley was top seed in Olbia and won four matches without dropping a set
- He beat Luca Nardi 6-2 6-4 in the semi-final
- It was his first Olbia final and his fourth final of 2026
- The final was scheduled against second seed Damir Dzumhur
ConfirmedSources checked 18 Oct 2026, 04:35 · Europe/Bucharest
A Sunday afternoon final in Sardinia and a Monday first round in Brussels leaves no acclimatisation and the tightest turnaround in this part of the draw, at the end of five matches in six days. Gaston finished in Roanne, giving him three days to travel to Belgium and practise on the indoor courts. The firm evidence is the calendar rather than any fatigue effect: the cost depends on how long the final runs and how it ends, neither of which was settled when this was compiled. It is a schedule fact between two players who were otherwise placed in the same draw at the same time.
- The Olbia final was set for Sunday 18 October at 15:00 local time
- This Brussels first round is dated 19 October
- Gaston's most recent match was in Roanne
To watchSources checked 18 Oct 2026, 04:35 · Europe/Bucharest
Roanne gave Gaston his first competitive indoor matches of the autumn and he won two of three, including a comeback from a set down against Herbert, so he reaches Brussels with recent time on the surface. The quarter-final is the warning: a 6-1 first set and a tiebreak lost from 4-1 up against a 20-year-old ranked 152, which is the most recent read on his level indoors. That sits awkwardly against the 250-level quarter-final he produced in Hangzhou a fortnight earlier, and leaves his form reading inconsistent rather than either rising or falling. He has had since to prepare, against an opponent arriving from a final.
- Gaston was the top seed in Roanne
- He beat Herbert 3-6 6-3 6-4 in the round of 16
- Budkov Kjaer won the quarter-final 6-1 7-6(7)
- Gaston had led the second-set tiebreak 4-1
