Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 04:03 · Europe/Bucharest

Seventeen days after Wu beat him 6-3 6-2 in the Asian Games semi-final, Matsuoka gets another look on hard courts.

Wu, ranked 113 to Matsuoka's 247, is the likelier winner, but 1.25 asks him to win four times in five and his 7-8 recent record does not carry that. Matsuoka at 3.5 is the price that offers something.

Context

The Nagoya semi-final is the freshest common reference point and it was one-sided: Wu conceded five games across 80 minutes and never went to a third set. Matsuoka's own verdict was that he had been well beaten. Conditions change the read, though. Nagoya was a national-team knockout with a home crowd behind Matsuoka, who had just survived a 2-5 final set and a leg medical timeout earlier in the week, while Nansha is a 75-level Challenger where Wu has not played since Shanghai on 9 October.
- Wu won the Nagoya semi-final 6-3 6-2 in 1 hour 20 minutes
- Matsuoka was seeded eighth and Wu third at the Asian Games
- Matsuoka wrote afterwards that he had been well beaten in the semi-final
- The Nansha main draw, published, pairs Wu with Matsuoka in round one
ConfirmedSources checked 18 Oct 2026, 04:01 · Europe/Bucharest
The route matters more than the medal: he closed out a third-round match he was two games from losing, took a leg medical timeout inside it, and then eliminated the second seed after dropping the opening set. That is the clearest evidence available that he can beat better-ranked opponents in best-of-three format. The limit is the setting. A national-team draw thins out after the top few seeds and every match is best of three, so the run does not by itself carry into Challenger results, as his 6-2 6-3 first-round loss in Jinan showed.
- Matsuoka described a week of climbing back from the brink, starting with the 2-5 escape in the third round
- He posted the quarter-final as a 3-6 6-2 6-0 win over the second seed
- He called it a once-in-a-lifetime stage at Japan's first home Asian Games in 32 years
- He was Japan's only men's singles medallist at the tournament
ConfirmedSources checked 18 Oct 2026, 04:01 · Europe/Bucharest
Reaching a home Asian Games final is the standout result in Wu's recent record and the reason he occupies the second seed line at a 75-level event, with the man who beat him seeded first. He also carried a mixed doubles entry that week, so his Games schedule was heavier than Matsuoka's singles-only one. The bearing on a first round against the world No. 247 is indirect: it speaks to his standing in the region rather than to any current physical or form problem.
- Wong beat Wu 6-2 6-4 in the men's singles final
- The medal list records Wong as gold medallist and Wu as silver
- Wu had reached the final by beating Matsuoka the previous day
- Wu was entered in the mixed doubles as well as the singles at the Games
ConfirmedSources checked 18 Oct 2026, 04:01 · Europe/Bucharest
A Challenge 75 on Chinese hard courts rarely holds three of the four Asian Games medallists, and here the top two seeds are the two men who contested the Nagoya final 16 days before the event began. That concentration is what makes a first-round draw between the second seed and a bronze medallist possible at this level. Seeding follows ranking rather than the Games result, so the draw reflects one unusually strong regional entry list rather than anything about either player's current form.
- The event runs 18-25 October at the Nansha International Tennis Center
- The singles main draw was published
- Seed lines list Wong first, Wu second and Zhang Zhizhen fourth
