Two routes into the same main-draw place: Milev's 15-match clay record against Jones's 123-place ranking edge and almost no clay evidence.

Milev is the likelier winner, having won 11 of 15 on clay and taken most of his opening sets, but Jones's 2.6 is the price that holds up — Milev at 1.44 asks for far more than his record justifies.

Context

Milev is a clay-court player by record and the Palermo week was his best recent result at Challenger level, with wins over a 271-ranked seed and a 335-ranked opponent in consecutive rounds. That run is the reference point for his current level, and it came at the same tier as Florence, one week earlier. The qualification is that the run ended in a 6-2 6-1 semifinal defeat and was followed by a three-set loss in the Catania qualifying decider, so it sits against, not instead of, the weaker results around it.
- Milev beat Ivan Gakhov 6-2 6-3 in the Palermo first round after coming through qualifying
- He beat Buvaysar Gadamauri, the tournament's eighth seed ranked 271, 6-2 7-6(5) to reach the quarterfinals
- He lost 6-2 6-1 to Francesco Passaro in Palermo on 10 October after three main-draw wins

The Catania decider went to two tiebreaks and a third set, so Milev's route into Florence included a long, losing match five days before this one, and he then had to play his way in from an alternate entry rather than a protected seed line. Alternate status is a draw-position fact, not a form or fitness verdict, and he answered it with a straight-set win over Lagutin. The relevant limit is that once he is on court here, the entry route changes nothing tactically; it mainly explains why a 619-ranked player needed an extra win to reach the main draw.
- Milev lost 7-6(5) 4-6 7-6(2) to Federico Iannaccone in the Catania qualifying final
- He is listed as an alternate entry in the Florence qualifying draw
- He beat Pavel Lagutin 6-3 6-4 in Florence qualifying

The seed line places Jones as one of the higher-ranked entrants in a qualifying field that Milev only joined as an alternate, and the ranking gap of 123 places matches that order. Both men won their opening match on 18 October, so the difference shows up in bracket protection rather than in preparation or rest. Seeding describes entry-list standing at this tier, not current form, and it carries no weight once the first ball is struck.
- Jones is the seventh seed in the Florence qualifying draw
- Milev is an alternate entry in the same qualifying draw
- Jones beat Martino Guidotti 6-1 6-0 on 18 October

Jones's ranked singles record shows nothing between 9 September and 11 October, and that gap was filled by national-team duty on hard courts in Japan, including a last-16 singles loss to a top-100 opponent. It means his first clay matches of this swing came only in October, so the surface adjustment is recent rather than established. The 1-6 4-6 scoreline in the last 16 also suggests the step up in class was steep, and a multi-sport Games run does not translate directly into Challenger form.
- Jones beat Salvador Urnukh 6-0 6-0 to reach the men's singles last 16 at the Asian Games
- He lost 6-1 6-4 to Aleksander Shevchenko in the last 16
- He and Pruchya Isaro lost 6-2 6-3 to Jisung Nam and Uisung Park in the men's doubles quarterfinals
