Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 18 Oct 2026, 17:46 · Europe/Bucharest

Sonego, ranked 87, is favoured to beat 17-year-old local wildcard Kouame, ranked 201, but four defeats in his past five completed matches make this a tighter first-round contest than the ranking suggests.

A Sonego win is the likelier result; a straight-set match is a low-confidence call. The 1.55 on Sonego asks too much given his 5-10 record over 15 matches, and the 2.4 on Kouame is no better. Neither quoted price is worthwhile.

Context

Sonego's only win since late August came against James Duckworth on 24 September, and both Asian events ended in his first match, including a three-set loss in Shanghai to a player ranked 430. The five-set US Open loss to Zverev shows the level remains reachable, but nothing since has reproduced it. He therefore opens in Lyon against a 17-year-old wildcard with a large ranking advantage that his recent results do not support, and with only one completed match win in his previous six outings.
- Kamil Majchrzak beat Sonego 7-5 6-2 in Tokyo qualifying, needing just over an hour.
- Sonego was seeded first in the Shanghai qualifying draw and lost his opener to Aziz Dougaz in three sets .
- At the US Open in early September he took Alexander Zverev to five sets in a match lasting close to five hours, losing the decider 6-4.

The wildcard removes qualifying from Kouame's week and places a player ranked No. 201 directly into a main draw in his home country, where the crowd will be on his side. His last competitive match was, so he arrives without the accumulated workload a qualifier would carry. Against an opponent who has played more than a decade on tour, entry route does not close the level gap, but it does remove the usual barrier for a player at his ranking.
- Kouame received the wildcard into the Lyon main draw .
- He is 17 years old and entered the tournament ranked No. 201.

Kouame reached the top 200 largely on the strength of a Roland-Garros run that made him one of the stories of the fortnight, but his tour-level results since have been lopsided, including a 6-4 6-0 loss to Alexandre Muller in Chengdu. The Roanne week is the freshest guide: he won a main-draw match indoors and then lost in straight sets to a 20-year-old ranked 152. That places him as a Challenger main-draw player stepping up rather than a settled tour competitor, which is the relevant frame for a first-round match against a former top-25 opponent.
- Kouame lost 6-4 6-2 to Nicolai Budkov Kjaer in the Roanne Challenger round of 16 .
- He had won his first-round match in Roanne 6-1 6-4 against Diego Dedura two days earlier.
- He lost 6-4 6-0 to Alexandre Muller in Chengdu on 24 September 2026.

Sonego's hard-court set record is more even than his ranking gap suggests.
Sonego split first sets 5-5 and second sets 4-6 across 10 completed hard-court matches from 4 August to 5 October 2026, with three first-set tiebreaks. Seven of those 10 matches ended in straight sets, so the even set record did not always produce a long match. The sample is only 10 matches, so this is a guide rather than a settled pattern.
- Sonego went 5-5 in first sets and 4-6 in second sets in 10 completed hard-court matches between 4 August and 5 October 2026.
- He averaged 5.7 games won and 5.3 lost in first sets, with three first-set tiebreaks.
- Seven of the 10 matches ended in straight sets.
