One main-draw place, two very different routes in: Safiullin has been trading blows with top-20 players, Simakin has been winning week after week below tour level.

Safiullin should win, but not with the comfort a 1.22 price implies, and that quote is one to leave alone. Simakin at 4.25 is the price that offers something, with the risk that his form has not yet been tested at this level.

Context

Neither man has direct entry, so this is the last step between them and a tour-level main draw in Almaty. For Safiullin, ranked No. 79, losing here leaves a 250-level week empty at the end of a productive China swing; for Simakin, ranked No. 154, winning would deliver a second ATP main draw inside a fortnight and a first at this event. The incentives are identical on both sides, so the fixture turns on level rather than on unequal motivation. A lost final is not automatically the end of the week, since a lucky-loser place depends on main-draw withdrawals.
- The match is scheduled for Court 1 on 18 October, around 13:00 local time, behind Walton against Basilashvili
- Safiullin is the top seed in the Almaty qualifying draw
- Simakin is seeded eighth in the same qualifying draw
- Both players won their opening qualifying matches

Safiullin had not competed for eight days, and the second-set tiebreak he lost turned what looked like a routine opener into a long match on the day before the qualifying final. Being extended by a player ranked No. 237 is a level signal as well as a workload one, and it came in his first indoor match of the autumn after a China swing played outdoors. The counterpoint is that three-set qualifying wins are ordinary at this level and a single match does not establish a pattern. What it does establish is that he arrives with genuine match time on these courts rather than a walkover.
- Safiullin beat Ivashka 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-4 in Almaty qualifying
- His previous match was the 9 October Shanghai second-round loss to Cerundolo
- Ivashka is ranked No. 237

Safiullin's last month is tour-level work: a straight-set win over a top-10 opponent and a semifinal at a 250, both on outdoor hard courts. That is a different calibre of opposition from the Challenger 50 and 75 fields Simakin has been beating, and it is the strongest argument that the 75-place ranking gap understates the difference. The counterpoint cuts both ways: he lost the round after each of those high points, to Rublev and Medvedev, so the run of results is good without being a run of wins. Form of this kind describes a level rather than guaranteeing a result in a qualifying final.
- Safiullin beat Cobolli 6-3, 6-2 in the Beijing first round in the first week of October
- He lost his next Beijing match to Rublev in three sets
- He reached the Hangzhou semifinal, losing to Medvedev

Simakin has spent 2026 winning week after week on Asian hard courts at Challenger 50 level, which is how a 22-year-old reaches No. 154 with a title count unusual for his ranking. That volume of wins also explains how he came through Shanghai qualifying in his first tour-level season, and it means the conditions in Almaty are continuous with everything he has played since August. The limitation is that almost all of it sits below tour level, and his only ATP main-draw match ended in a three-set defeat, so the step up in opposition remains the untested part. Safiullin, by contrast, has been playing that higher level all autumn.
- Simakin won three titles across the four consecutive Challenger 50 events at Phan Thiet in 2026
- He also won at Zhangjiagang before the Shanghai Masters
- He arrived in Shanghai having won three Challenger titles in a row
