A nine-match run and a title in Palermo put Passaro in Sunday's Maia final, with a fresher, higher-ranked Piros across the net, one win from the top 100.

Passaro looks the likelier winner, and his second-set record makes him the pick to take the middle set at 1.85. The 1.85 on him to win the match offers no clear advantage.

Context

A Challenger 100 title would deliver the largest ranking gain of Piros's season and put him in the top 100 for the first time, after a career-high No. 106 in March 2024. The milestone is one match away rather than parked in some later tournament, which makes this the most consequential final of his 2026. It matters to this fixture because the stake sits with the higher-ranked, third-seeded player, whose ranking would move furthest with a win. The limitation is that ranking arithmetic does not change how the final is played, and Piros has reached Challenger finals often enough that the setting is familiar rather than new.
- Piros is ranked No. 114, with a career-high No. 106 set in March 2024.
- A win in the Maia Open final would place him in the top 100 for the first time.
- Seeded third, he beat qualifier Alejo Sanchez Quilez 6-4, 6-4 to reach the final.

The Palermo title ended a stretch in which Passaro had fallen to No. 229 from a career-high No. 89 in February 2025, and he has not lost a match since 22 September, taking nine wins in twelve days. That matters because he arrives at the final with clay-court rhythm and fresh silverware while his ranking still describes a player well outside the top 200. His own framing of the title, as less valuable in points than his earlier ones but personally significant, points to a player rebuilding rather than peaking. The limitation is the opposition level inside that run: Milev (No. 619), Caniato (No. 318) and Forejtek (No. 343) sit well below the standard of a Challenger final.
- Passaro beat Jonas Forejtek 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-6(4) in the Palermo final .
- It was his fourth Challenger title and his first since Genova in 2024.
- He has won all nine matches he has played since 22 September, five at Palermo and four in Maia.

Passaro carries twice the recent match load of his opponent into the final: nine matches since 6 October, four of them on consecutive days in Maia, with two three-set wins in the last two rounds. Piros has played five matches in the same span, lost a single set at Maia and had a full day off before the semifinal. With a 13:00 Sunday start a day after both semifinals, recovery is the clearest physical difference between the two players. The limitation is that Piros's lighter week included a quarterfinal against Lorenzo Giustino that ran about two and a half hours, so the gap in time on court is narrower than the match count implies.
- Passaro won five matches at Palermo between 6 and 11 October, then four in Maia.
- He played on 14, 15, 16 and, beating Marco Trungelliti 2-6, 7-5, 7-6(5) and Matej Dodig 5-7, 6-1, 6-4.
- Piros played on 13, 14, 16 and, losing one set, in the quarterfinal.
- The final is scheduled for 13:00 on Sunday, the day after both semifinals.

Piros's edge at the start of matches has been clear; carrying it through the middle of the match has not.
Piros averaged 5.7 games to 3.8 in first sets across those nine matches, then 4.1 to 4.7 in second sets, with no second-set tiebreaks at all. The split gives this final a natural swing point after a strong opening from him. Nine matches is a small sample, so the pattern is worth watching rather than treating as fixed.
- Piros won 7 of 9 first sets and lost 2 of 9 across nine clay matches between 8 August and 17 October 2026.
- In second sets over the same nine matches he is 4-5, averaging 4.1 games won to 4.7 lost.
- His first-set average is 5.7 games won to 3.8 lost, and he played no second-set tiebreaks in that sample.
