Context last updated 17 Oct 2026, 03:25 · Europe/Bucharest

The last French player in Roanne, Matteo Martineau, meets the 20-year-old who knocked out top seed Hugo Gaston, with a place in the final at stake.

Budkov Kjaer's higher ranking and better break-point conversion make him the likelier winner, even though Martineau's serve has been the stronger and the two share an 8-6 hard-court record. Martineau at 3.00 is the one quoted price carrying an edge; Budkov Kjaer at 1.33 asks for more than the evidence supports.

Context

Gaston was the top seed and ranked No. 89, 63 places above Budkov Kjaer, making this the strongest win of the Norwegian's Roanne run and a direct test of his indoor-hard level. The 6-1 opening set was one-sided, but the second set went to a 7-6(7) tiebreak, so the scoreline overstates the margin. That matters for this semi-final because it shows Budkov Kjaer can beat a higher-ranked opponent here without needing three sets, while also flagging how tight the second set became.
- Won 6-1, 7-6(7) against top seed Hugo Gaston in the Roanne quarter-final .
- Gaston was the tournament's top seed and ranked No. 89, while Budkov Kjaer was ranked No. 152.

Martineau's serve is the clearest single weapon either player brings into this match.
In 14 hard-court matches in his current sample, Martineau averaged 8.8 aces and won 73.8% of first-serve points, against 4.1 aces and 68% for Budkov Kjaer. It helps explain why a player ranked 120 places lower holds the same 8-6 hard-court record. The counterweight is his second serve, at 50% of points won, and a break-point conversion rate of 32.7%.
- Across 14 hard-court matches tracked through 2026-10-16, Martineau averaged 8.8 aces per match (123 aces) and won 73.8% of first-serve points (562 of 762).
- In the same sample his hard-court record is 8-6, with 50% of second-serve points won (187 of 374) and 32.7% of break points converted (35 of 107).
Martineau is the only French player left in the Roanne draw after his straight-set quarter-final win over Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg, so he carries the home support into the semi-final. That shapes the atmosphere and the local stakes around a player ranked No. 272 rather than giving him a playing advantage. He closed the quarter-final in two sets after going three sets in the previous round, so the run into the semi-final has not been unusually short.
- Beat Sascha Gueymard Wayenburg 6-3, 6-4 in the Roanne quarter-final .
- Was the only French player to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.

The top-10 placing in the 2026 NextGen Finals Race is a season-level objective that runs alongside the ranking points at stake in Roanne, and it explains why the Norwegian is still competing deep into October. The competition for the last qualifying positions is close, so each win in the closing weeks carries weight. This is context on his season trajectory rather than a playing condition specific to the semi-final.
- Reached the top 10 of the 2026 NextGen Finals Race after advancing to the Roanne quarter-finals .
- The race for the final qualifying places is close, with little separating the contenders.
