Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 16 Oct 2026, 22:37 · Europe/Bucharest

Two first-time WTA 125 semifinalists meet on clay in Magaluf.

Geerlings, No. 505, has not dropped a set and beat top seed Julia Grabher; Curmi, No. 233, has gone three sets in every round and is the higher-ranked player. Geerlings is the slight favourite in a close match, but neither price on either player to win — 1.95 on Geerlings, 1.85 on Curmi — offers anything worth backing.

Context

A first top-100 win on clay, achieved in straight sets against the event's top seed, is the clearest evidence that Geerlings is producing above her No. 505 ranking this week. It gives this semifinal real competitive content instead of a pure ranking mismatch. The limitation is scope: Grabher is the only top-100 opponent Geerlings has beaten, while Curmi has won three matches here and sits at No. 233, so the result lifts Geerlings' threat level without reversing the ranking gap.
- Geerlings beat top seed Julia Grabher 7-6(4) 6-3 in the Mallorca WTA 125 quarter-finals .
- The win was Geerlings' first over a top-100 opponent, with Grabher ranked No. 97.
- Geerlings entered the event on a wildcard from the Spanish tennis federation.
- It is Geerlings' first WTA 125 semifinal, reached in her first WTA 125 quarter-final.

Curmi has now beaten higher-ranked opposition in consecutive rounds, including a seed, which is the form signal that matters most in a last-four match between two players outside the top 200. A live ranking around No. 218 would also be a new career high and widens the gap with Geerlings at No. 505 into something substantive. The limitation is that both of those wins went to a deciding set, so the form has arrived with extra court time.
- Curmi beat fourth seed Marina Bassols Ribera 3-6 6-3 6-3 in the Mallorca WTA 125 second round .
- Bassols Ribera was ranked No. 129 and seeded fourth.
- The win was Curmi's best of the season and lifted her live ranking to around No. 218.

Geerlings won 13 of the 15 second sets in that clay sample, averaging 5.87 games to 3.2, with only one second-set tiebreak. If this semifinal is level after a set, that record is the clearest evidence she holds the advantage late in the match. It is a 15-match sample rather than a long-term rate.
- Clay setEvidence, 15 completed best-of-3 matches from 22 Aug to 16 Oct 2026
- Second sets: 13 wins, 2 losses; average 5.87 games won to 3.2 lost
- One second-set tiebreak across the 15 matches
This is a national first, so the occasion carries more weight than a standard WTA 125 last-four match and explains the Maltese interest around Curmi's week. For the fixture itself it is context rather than a playing condition: it reflects her standing as Malta's leading player, not a change in her game this week. The stake it adds is that a win would extend the same first into a maiden WTA 125 final.
- Curmi beat Elizara Yaneva 6-1 4-6 6-4 in the Mallorca WTA 125 quarter-finals .
- It is the first WTA 125 semifinal by a Maltese player.
- Curmi is the first Maltese player to play a WTA main draw and Malta's first junior Grand Slam competitor.
