Sun and Cui, both in on wildcards, meet in the Jinan first round with 117 ranking places between them, yet Cui won their September hard-court meeting in Shanghai.

Sun, 7-7 on hard courts in this window to Cui's 5-9, is the likelier winner, and at 2.2 his price offers value; the 1.6 on Cui is one to avoid.

Context

Both players enter the main draw on wildcards on equal footing, but Sun arrives from Wuning with a reported lower-back medical timeout in his last match and only a short turnaround, while Cui's best recent results came against higher-ranked opponents in Beijing and Shanghai qualifying.

The treatment came in Sun's final match before Jinan, leaving him only two rest days and a short trip between Chinese hard-court events. Lower-back trouble can restrict serving and lateral movement on hard courts, which is where Sun does most of his work. He completed that quarter-final and no withdrawal or retirement has been recorded, so this is a recurring physical issue rather than a confirmed absence; the recurrence, a third timeout this season, is what makes his condition the main open question for this match.
- Treatment on Sun's lower back was recorded at 3-6, 2-3 in the second set .
- The timeout was logged as Sun's third medical timeout of the season.

This is the freshest on-court evidence between the pair, with Cui winning in straight sets on the same surface used in Jinan. It gives Cui a concrete recent reference for how to handle Sun's baseline game. Sun's higher ranking reflects a longer body of work across 2026 rather than the outcome of this specific encounter, so the head-to-head and the ranking point in different directions.
- Cui beat Sun 7-5 6-4 on hard courts in Shanghai in September 2026.

Altmaier was the favourite in that match, so the win is the strongest recent result on Cui's record and the clearest evidence he can beat a high-level opponent on a hard court. It stands out against the rest of his recent form, which has mostly been defeats to higher-ranked players, and he lost his next match. That contrast matters here: it shows the level Cui can reach in one match without showing that he has sustained it.
- Cui beat Daniel Altmaier 6-4 6-1 in Beijing qualifying in late September 2026.
- Altmaier was ranked No. 67 at the time.

Vukic, ranked around No. 115, was a heavy favourite, so Cui taking a set and forcing two tiebreaks against a tour-level opponent is a relevant benchmark one week before Jinan. The match ran to three tight sets and included a medical timeout for Cui, so the performance came at some physical cost before he travelled. It is also a different kind of test from his usual Challenger matches, against an opponent used to the pace of the main tour.
- Cui took the first set off Aleksandar Vukic in Shanghai qualifying and lost 4-6 7-6 7-6.
- A medical timeout for Cui was recorded during the second set.
