Pre-match view

Context last updated 7 Oct 2026, 03:00 · Europe/Bucharest

Bai has lost the opening set in eight of her twelve hard-court matches in this window, and she meets No.

134 Jones, who won her Suzhou opener 6-4 6-0 and reached a Jingshan semifinal last week. Jones is the slightly more likely winner, but the 1.6 on her is a price to leave; the 2.3 on Bai, whose second sets are her strongest split, is the one that offers something.

Context

Bai, No. 233, took out a top-110 opponent on home hard courts, the strongest recent case that her ranking understates her current level. It matters for this fixture because Jones, No. 134, sits much nearer that beaten opponent than to the seeds above them, so the Uchijima result is the closest available guide to how Bai handles this standard of opposition. The counterweight is uneven form against ranked players: she lost in straight sets to Linda Fruhvirtova in Beijing six days earlier.
- Bai beat Moyuka Uchijima 4-6 6-3 6-3 in the Suzhou Open first round .
- Uchijima was ranked about 127 places above Bai, No. 106 against No. 233.
- Bai lost her previous completed match 6-2 6-3 to Linda Fruhvirtova in the China Open first round .

A WTA 125 semifinal as the third seed is the deepest recent run in this matchup and shows an 18-year-old already seeded at this tier. Arriving in Suzhou with a week of hard-court wins behind her frames Jones as the player with the more convincing recent form. The limit is that the run ended in a straight-sets loss to Shubladze, ranked below her, so it evidences consistency at this level rather than a record of beating higher-ranked players.
- Jones was seeded third at the WTA 125 event in Jingshan and lost her semifinal 7-5 6-4 to Alexandra Shubladze .

Bai's hard-court season has been defined by recovery more than front-running.
The same twelve matches show her winning 3.8 games and losing 5.3 in first sets, then winning 4.9 and losing 3.5 in second sets, at 2.33 sets and 20.6 games per match. Against Jones, who lost 8 of 14 opening sets on hard courts but has split second sets 7-7, the pattern suggests the early exchanges may matter more than the later ones. The sample is a single 12-match stretch containing one tiebreak, so it reads as a tendency rather than a fixed rule.
- Bai has won 4 of 12 first sets and 8 of 12 second sets in completed hard-court matches between 13 July and 6 October 2026 (12 matches tracked).
- She averages 3.8 games won and 5.3 lost in first sets, and 4.9 won against 3.5 lost in second sets.
- Her 12 hard-court matches average 20.6 total games and 2.33 sets, with one tiebreak.
She still lands 58.7% of first serves on hard courts and wins 62.8% of those points, saving 48.8% of break points (60 of 123), so the free points are a recurring feature rather than a collapse. Her total-points share on hard courts sits at 50.5% across those 14 matches, almost exactly level. For this second-round match the double-fault count is the clearest opening for a returner, though the same record shows she has largely offset it with a first serve that wins the majority of its points.
- Jones has 90 double faults and 24 aces across 15 matches tracked in her current window, an average of 6.0 double faults and 1.6 aces per match.
- On hard courts over 14 matches the split is 76 double faults against 20 aces, with 58.7% of first serves in and 62.8% of those points won.
- She has saved 48.8% of break points on hard courts, 60 of 123, across those 14 matches.
