Context last updated 7 Oct 2026, 02:40 · Europe/Bucharest

A world No. 77 with one win in his last seven matches meets an unbeaten qualifier making his ATP main-draw debut: Simakin's 15-0 hard-court run says he is the likelier winner, but every one of those wins came below tour level.

His 1.44 match price asks for more than that record supports. Three quoted selections carry something instead — Ugo Carabelli at 2.75 to win, Ugo Carabelli at 2.5 for the first set, and Over 2.5 sets at 2.4.

Context

Simakin, 22, came through two Shanghai qualifying matches to reach his first ATP Tour main draw, so his ATP-level debut falls at a Masters 1000 event against the world No. 77. Those qualifying rounds also gave him completed match time on these courts in the two days before this first round, while his opponent last competed in late September. The clear qualifier is the level of opposition: everything behind his current ranking was built on the Challenger circuit, and he has no tour-level match to measure against. His route included a dropped opening set against Luka Pavlovic before a straight-sets win over Rigele Te.
- Simakin came through two qualifying matches on 5 and to secure a place in the Shanghai main draw.
- It will be his first ATP Tour main-draw appearance, and his ATP-level debut comes at a Masters 1000 event.
- His qualifying opener against Luka Pavlovic went to three sets, 4-6 6-4 6-1; the final round was 6-3 6-2 against Rigele Te.

Simakin won four ATP Challenger titles in 2026, all in Asia, taking three of them in a three-week September block at Zhangjiagang and two Phan Thiet events. That run built the ranking that placed him in Shanghai qualifying and is the clearest evidence of the level he brings into this match. It is a Challenger-level record rather than a tour-level one, so the step up to a Masters 1000 main draw against a top-80 opponent remains untested. The Phan Thiet weeks were also demanding: the second title required three-set wins over Max Purcell, Hunter Heck and Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez.
- Simakin won the Zhangjiagang Challenger on 6 September 2026, beating Kasidit Samrej 6-3 6-1 in the final.
- He then won consecutive Phan Thiet Challenger titles, beating Arthur Weber 6-4 7-6(5) and Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez 6-7(4) 6-4 6-3 .
- All four of his 2026 tally came in Asia.

Ugo Carabelli has won once in his last seven matches, and his two most recent outings were straight-set first-round defeats on hard courts, 6-2 6-3 to Rinky Hijikata in Tokyo qualifying and 6-3 6-2 to Federico Cina at Chengdu . He has not competed since, whereas Simakin arrives with two completed qualifying matches in Shanghai. Hard courts have been the weaker half of his 2026 season, with his deeper runs coming on clay, so the surface and the gap in match sharpness run the same direction. The modest ranking of the opponents in those defeats is the reason this reads as a form record rather than proof of a lasting level drop.
- Ugo Carabelli lost 6-2 6-3 to Rinky Hijikata in the first round of Tokyo qualifying .
- He had lost 6-3 6-2 to Federico Cina in the Chengdu first round, a match he entered instead of facing Nuno Borges.
- He has recorded one win in his last seven matches.

His sets have been competitive rather than one-sided: he won 12 of 15 opening sets by an average of 6-4.3 games, and six matches still went to a third set.
That mix matters here because Ugo Carabelli's tracked hard-court matches have mostly ended quickly, so if Simakin's level translates to this opponent, a third set stays a live possibility rather than a formality.
- Simakin's 15 tracked hard-court matches ran from 4 September to 6 October 2026, averaging 22.8 total games and 2.4 sets per match.
- He won 12 of 15 first sets (average 6-4.3 games) and 12 of 15 second sets (average 5.6-3.6), with six matches needing a decider.
- Scorelines were nine 2-0 wins and six 2-1 wins, and six of the 15 matches included a tiebreak.
