Quick Take

Pre-match view

Context last updated 4 Oct 2026, 16:05 · Europe/Bucharest

Ilia Simakin arrives 15-0 on hard courts in a September window, but all those wins came against players ranked roughly 260 to 656, and Luka Pavlovic has taken better-ranked opponents to deciders.

Simakin is the likelier winner. The 1.44 about him to win, 1.50 for either set and 1.55 to win by two games or more are all shorter than the tennis justifies, as is Pavlovic at 2.75. No quoted price here is worth taking.

Context

Simakin is the higher-ranked player at 152 and arrives unbeaten on hard courts in the tracked window.
Simakin brings the strongest form line into the Shanghai qualifying opener, having won every hard-court match in the tracked window while conceding only five sets. The caution is the opposition: all 15 wins came against players ranked roughly 260 to 656, so this is a reason to favour him rather than proof against a top-205 opponent.
- 15-0 on hard courts across 15 tracked matches from 1 to 20 September 2026
- 62.2% of games won (207 of 333)
- 85.7% of sets won (30 of 35)
This is a qualifying first-round match at a Masters 1000 hard-court event, so the winner needs one more win to reach the main draw. Both players have been competing on hard courts through the current swing, which makes the surface a neutral rather than a distinguishing factor. The Court 6 assignment is an outer-court detail that carries no implied playing advantage. The draw placement alone establishes no ranking, form or fitness edge for either player.
- Pavlovic and Simakin are drawn against each other in the opening round of Shanghai qualifying, listed for Court 6 on 5 October 2026.

Pavlovic, ranked 205, has kept his hard-court matches close rather than being outclassed in this window.
Second sets in Pavlovic's recent hard-court matches averaged 10.4 games and six of the 14 went to a tiebreak, so his scorelines tend to stay long even when he loses. Against an opponent whose wins have mostly come in straight sets, that points to a match with more games than Simakin's recent average of 22.2. It does not change who is favoured, but it says something about the shape of the contest.
- Second sets averaged 5.2 games won and 5.1 lost across 14 hard-court matches
- 6 of those 14 hard-court matches featured a second-set tiebreak
- Total games averaged 24.3 per match over the same 14 matches
World No. 600 Hunter Heck sits far below Pavlovic's 205, which makes that three-set loss an outlier in his recent record.
A single defeat to a much lower-ranked opponent is a caution rather than a verdict, and Pavlovic won the opening set before losing a third-set tiebreak. Simakin met the same player three days later on 19 September and won 2-1, a small but concrete comparison of how the two have been playing. It supports Simakin without settling anything on its own.
- Pavlovic lost 6-3, 1-6, 6-7 to Hunter Heck, ranked 600, on 16 September 2026
- Pavlovic took the opening set before losing the next two

Simakin's wins almost always come in straight sets, so only a narrow three-set win with a heavy lost set would fail to clear a one-and-a-half game deficit.
