Context last updated 7 Oct 2026, 02:22 · Europe/Bucharest

A home wild card days after an Asian Games final against a lucky loser on a third straight day of tennis.

Wu, who won both previous meetings including 6-2 6-3 at Cary in 2025, is the likely winner, but the 1.8 match price offers little. Wu to win in straight sets at 2.6 is the one quoted price with value.

Context

Zheng's place in the main draw comes from a defeat rather than a win: he lost the deciding qualifying match after winning his opener from a set down the previous day. He enters the first round on a third consecutive day of competition on these courts, while Wu has not played a tour match since 4 September and had no qualifying to manage. The two are separated by 19 ranking places, so a match-sharp player against a fresh one is the clearest structural difference in the fixture. The counterweight is that Zheng has competitive rhythm and two completed wins in Shanghai this week, so the extra court time is not purely a cost.
- Zheng lost the final round of Shanghai qualifying to Nicolas Mejia 6-3 6-4 .
- Zheng came from a set down to beat Federico Agustin Gomez 6-7(7) 6-3 6-3 in the first qualifying round on 5 October 2026.
- Zheng was placed in the main draw as a lucky loser and drawn against Yibing Wu in the first round.

Nagoya was the end of a full week of singles matches and the final ended in a straight-sets defeat, four days before this first round, so Wu's preparation for Shanghai has been compressed. Until that event his most recent tour tennis was the US Open third round on 4 September, which means his return to tour hard courts follows a month away from the tour. There is recent history with the player who beat him: Wu defeated Wong in the 2025 National Games semi-final before losing this final. The counterpoint is that Wu reached the Nagoya final without dropping a set, so the week showed continuity rather than decline.
- Coleman Wong beat Wu 6-2 6-4 in the Asian Games men's singles final .
- Wu took silver; Khumoyun Sultanov and Hayato Matsuoka took bronze.
- Wu beat Hayato Matsuoka in the semi-finals without dropping a set, reaching his second Asian Games singles final eight years after winning silver in Jakarta.
- Wong's win was Hong Kong's first Asian Games tennis gold and carried a place at the 2028 Olympics.

Zheng's run in New York came in his first US Open main draw and produced the results that define his current ranking, taking him 19 places up into the top 100 and to a career-best No. 88 by mid-September. It matters here because it is the clearest evidence that he can beat top-100 opposition on a hard court at tour level, which is the level he has not reproduced since. The limitation is that the block of form is a month old and his ranking has slipped back to No. 94, and each of his four events since has ended in a straight-set defeat.
- Zheng reached the 2026 US Open third round in his first appearance in that main draw, beating Yunchaokete Bu in four sets before losing a five-set match to Arthur Gea.
- The run lifted him 19 places into the top 100 for the first time.
- Zheng was up to world No. 88 by mid-September 2026 while still listed as a Columbia College student-athlete.

In that sample Wu went 4-3 in first sets and 3-4 in second sets, so his two-set results came in both directions.
Wu's hard-court matches in this window have tended to be settled quickly rather than stretched, which is the shape a comfortable win here would take; the sample ends on 23 August 2026, before his US Open and Asian Games weeks, so it does not cover his most recent tennis.
- Seven completed hard-court best-of-three matches from 12 July to 23 August 2026 produced scorelines of 2-0 three times, 2-1 once and 0-2 three times.
- Set 1 record 4-3 and set 2 record 3-4 across the same seven matches.
- Three of the seven matches included a tiebreak, and the average match lasted 21.86 games and 2.14 sets.
