Context last updated 6 Oct 2026, 00:22 · Europe/Bucharest

Shanghai's first round pairs two mid-ranked hard-courters, but Majchrzak has lost eight of eleven opening sets on hard since late July while Hanfmann's first-set and break-point numbers hold up, making Hanfmann the slightly likelier winner.

Hanfmann to win at 2.25, to take the first set at 2.1, to win 2-0 at 3.5 and straight sets at 1.5 all hold an edge; the quoted prices on Majchrzak do not.

Context

's-Hertogenbosch in June 2026 delivered the first ATP singles title of Majchrzak's career, and he closed the week by beating Auger-Aliassime, Medvedev and De Minaur, three top-10 opponents. It is the main reason he is treated as a main-draw threat in Shanghai rather than a journeyman at No. 70, and it is the result his 2026 reputation rests on. The limitation is surface and timing: the title came on grass in June and he has not produced a comparable week since, so it stands as a ceiling rather than a reading of his current form.
- Majchrzak's first ATP Tour singles title was at 's-Hertogenbosch in June 2026
- He beat Auger-Aliassime, Medvedev and De Minaur during the title week
- The week was reported as the best of his career
ConfirmedSources checked 6 Oct 2026, 00:20 · Europe/Bucharest
From 's-Hertogenbosch onwards, Majchrzak has repeatedly failed to win two matches in a row - eight events without a back-to-back victory through the Hangzhou and Tokyo stops in late September. A Masters 1000 first round turns on exactly that, because best-of-three gives no room for one flat day, and his results show a one-win-then-out pattern. The counterweight is the standard of opposition: most of those defeats came against established tour players, so the record points to inconsistency at tour level rather than a drop to a lower standard.
- Majchrzak competed in eight events after 's-Hertogenbosch without winning two matches at any of them
- His 2026 hard-court record stood at 10-13 before the Hangzhou stop
- Coverage noted his form was more inconsistent after the title

Majchrzak has often been the slower starter on hard courts, dropping the opening set before finding his range on serve and return.
A best-of-three first round at a Masters event leaves little room for a slow start, and the opening set is the weakest part of his hard-court sample. His second-set numbers are competitive, so the match can turn after an early setback, but he has to survive the first set in Shanghai to use that recovery.
- Hard-court best-of-three matches tracked from 28 July to 29 September 2026: 11 matches
- First sets: 3 wins, 8 losses, averaging 4.36 games won and 5.64 games lost
- Second sets: 6 wins, 5 losses, averaging 5.55 games won and 5.09 games lost
- Four of the 11 matches included a tiebreak
Hanfmann's Beijing campaign ended with a 185-minute qualifying loss to Tomas Machac in which he recovered from 1-4 down in the second set and saved a match point in the tiebreak to force a decider. He arrives in Shanghai with nine days since that match, so fatigue is not a factor, and the performance shows he can sustain a long hard-court contest. The limitation is the outcome: it extended a run without a tour-level win since mid-August, so it is evidence of competitiveness rather than of closing out tight sets.
- Machac beat Hanfmann 7-6(7) 6-7(6) 6-4 in a match lasting 185 minutes
- Hanfmann came back from 1-4 down in the second set and saved a match point in the tiebreak
- Hanfmann hit 10 aces in the match
